Calling all boozehounds! December 5th is your day to party 1930s style, as we celebrate the ratification of the 21st amendment to the U.S. constitution. You know--the end of prohibition!

On December 5th 1933, the Twenty-first amendment was officially ratified, out-amending the sucky, unpopular 18th amendment which outlawed the sale of alcohol. So thanks to this kickass group of lawyerly words, we've spent the last 74 years getting completely, law-abidingly shithoused. Yay!

If you want to celebrate the occasion properly, head to the Alamo Downtown, where they'll be screening the gangster classic The Public Enemy (James Cagney's, not Chuck D's). Released in 1931, the film follows the exploits of Tom Powers, a vicious bootlegging gangster who likes to attack his girlfriend with fruit. A controversial classic, it's one of the rare films that has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and it's currently considered a cornerstone of the gangster genre.

But wait... there's more! This tasty bit of beer-soaked noir will be sandwiched between a live performance by the White Ghost Shivers and an afterparty at Mugshots, hosted by Dewars. And there's nothing Johnny Law can do about it.
