Austinist Weekend Music Preview: Spoiled Royals and Soundcheck Magazine Winter Showcase

While attending the University of Texas at Austin, one faces a constant barrage of “the weekend starts on Thursday” type advertisements. Although largely for exposure of Thursday night drink specials at bars on 6th Street, the intrinsic appeal of that statement bleeds through on days like these. Kick off your weekend early (and gently) with Swedish singer-songwriter José González at The Parish or dance away at the Electric Six show at Emo’s. Antone’s and The Continental Club also vie for your attention on Thursday evening with triple bills of local goodies. The former presents a line-up consisting of Spoiled Royals and Muchos Backflips, opening up for Major Major (featured this week on Le Diamant Brut). Get there early so as to not miss the Spoiled Royals. Featuring the creative lyricism and riffage of Mikey Royal, complemented by a rhythm section boasting Brando Royal (currently also playing drums in Red Line Riot) and Charlie Royal (a sound engineer by day), the Royals serve up a gritty combination of blues and garage rock. Brando and Mikey were once a part of Steamroller, staples at 6th St. venues such as The Black Cat and The Steamboat in the 90’s, while they also recorded as the short-lived (yet memorable) punk act The Quitters briefly. Meanwhile, The Continental Club offers up Amplified Heat, The Jungle Rockers, and The Ugly Beats whilst Brazos and Vampire Weekend take the stage this night at The Mohawk.

Make your way to the east side on Friday evening, for the Victory Grill presents the alt-country folk of Brothers And Sisters along with the psychedelic samplings of The Golden Boys. Swanky blues from Black Joe Lewis rounds off this killer line-up. The Lucky Lounge favors the soft strains of Nano and the Afternoon while Dremnt The End celebrate the release of their new album at The Parish. The Groundwork Music Project provides an evening extravaganza at Club 115 on Friday. Enjoy music by The Boxing Lesson, Built By Snow, and The Heirs for free by RSVPing at do512.com but please also donate!

The purpose of the Groundwork Music Project is simple: to provide music education to young children who could not otherwise afford it. Preschool years are critical to the development of musical skills, and musical skills are critical to our development as human beings. Exposing young children to a rich musical environment nourishes a natural process of learning to carry a tune and keep a beat.

Be sure to save something for a massive Saturday night in the city. Our pick has to be the Soundcheck Magazine bash at the Lounge at Emo’s. The local magazine is in the process of revamping its website, and the Winter Showcase features music by Moth!Fight! and Micah P. Hinson. Catch up on both acts courtesy of previous (but recent) Le Diamant Brut posts done by Austinist writer Will Mills -- Moth!Fight! Le Diamant Brut and Micah P. Hinson Le Diamant Brut. Lambert’s hosts another intriguing act tonight with Afrofreque furnishing electronica tinged hip-hop at the 2nd Street venue. The band features members of acts such as The Killer Bees, Patrice Pike, David Garza, and Dirty Wormz, and is celebrating the release of their debut album, Fresh Soul Frequencies. Club 115 presents a similar groove-friendly evening with soulful funk from Akina Adderley & The Vintage Playboys. If your dance floor whims are partial to thumping electro-beats instead, celebrate DJ:/Rubix’s birthday at the Beauty Bar with The Laughing and Car Stereo (Wars). Last but not least, Party Ends! and Birds Barbershop bring us Man Fest at Birds’ 2110 S. Lamar Blvd location from 2 p.m. until 7. The event kicks off Man Month at Birds’ -- all men’s hair products can be purchased for half off with a haircut. Music by lovable local pop act, Golden Bear, along with the promise of “Arm Wrestling Contests” and a “Lumberjack Photobooth” make this a must-do during the early afternoon on Saturday. There will also be free wieners, and free booze from Dewars and Steamworks Brewing Company, while it lasts of course! Be a man, go to Birds’ this month.
