Happy Buy Nothing Day!

If the thought of hitting Black Friday shopping seems far too overwhelming, join your fellow anti-consumerist comrades for Buy Nothing Day.

The annual celebration taking place today (Black Friday) happens once again, and simply asks you to buy nothing—a 24-hour moratorium on consumer spending on the day that, for many, is defined by shopping. Join the various ways to get involved (from the credit card cut up to the whirl-mart). If you missed the Black Friday ban, you an always jump on the Buy Nothing Christmas bandwagon.

According to the website:

Buy Nothing Christmas is not really about refusing to spend a dime over the holiday season. It’s about taking a deep breath and deciding to opt out of the hype‚ the overcrowded malls‚ and the stressful to–do lists. It’s about reminding ourselves to really think about what we are buying‚ why we are buying it‚ and whether we really need it at all.

If nothing else, at least support Austin businesses, and try to shop local. Happy shopping (or not)!
