Maybe it is true that good things come to those who wait. After back-to-back losses to open conference play, the Texas Longhorns have waited -- through nail-biting finishes and devastating injuries -- and now stand on the verge of what is most definitely a good thing (apologies to Martha Stewart).
A win over Texas A&M on Friday would give the Longhorns:
- revenge for a disheartening loss last year to the Aggies;
- their seventh straight 10-win season;
- a shot at the Big 12 South title and a berth in the conference championship; and
- a likely spot in a Bowl Championship Series (BCS) game.
Things are a bit gloomier on the A&M side.
The Aggies have lost three games in a row and four of their last five, and Coach Dennis Franchione is on the verge of being ousted. Even a win over the Longhorns may not save his job, but it would certainly soften the blow on the way out.
Game Notes
Opponents to Watch: Quarterback Stephen McGee, who was a high school teammate of Texas receiver Jordan Shipley, leads the Aggies in both passing and rushing. McGee has 828 yards rushing and 1,785 yards passing, with a combined 13 touchdowns. Powerful running back Jorvorskie Lane has been A&M's touchdown machine again this year with 16 scores, while speedy Michael Goodson has added 574 yards on the ground.
Old School: The Texas-A&M rivalry dates back to when the teams first met in 1894. In those 118 meetings, Texas holds a 73-35-5 advantage. Last year's Aggie win snapped a streak of six straight Longhorn victories.
Mr. November: Texas junior Jamaal Charles has strung together three tremendous games and is one of the hottest running backs in the country right now. Charles ran for 290 yards against Nebraska, 180 yards against Oklahoma State, and 174 yards against Texas Tech, with a total of seven touchdowns along the way. Charles has 1,366 yards rushing this season, and has been named as one of the 10 semifinalists for the 2007 Doak Walker Award, which goes to the nation's top running back.
Tiebreaker Trouble: If Texas loses to A&M and Oklahoma State defeats Oklahoma, the Longhorns, Cowboys, and Sooners would finish in a three-way tie in the Big 12 South race. The tiebreaker would go to the team with the highest ranking in the Bowl Championship Series standings after this weekend.
Longhorns Lead In Academic Honors: Texas placed 23 players on the 2007 Academic All-Big 12 Football Team on Tuesday, the second straight year that Texas has led the conference in number of selections. Sixteen players made first-team, including senior Dallas Griffin, who won first-team honors in all four of his years at Texas.
