Austinist Weekend Music Preview: Ghostface Killah and Jason Morales

So you’re all set for an afternoon with the family and/or friends, tons of food on the horizon, be it Turkey or Tofurkey. Still, you need to scratch that live music itch before heading home. Well, fear not oh lovely residents of Austin, the city has a solid night of gigs on the 21st in store for the common layperson. If you’re not already planning on hitting up the Benko and The Boxing Lesson show at Stubb’s, surely you want to help Casino El Camino celebrate its 13th birthday, for you must have indulged in their awesome burgers by now. If not, sample their grub this special evening while enjoying music from The Strange Boys and The Golden Boys, most recently seen arm wrestling on The Austin Chronicle cover. (Update -- Casino El Camino's 13th birthday party has been postponed.) The Beauty Bar churns out the latest installment of 101X's Homegrown Live series featuring performances by Follow That Bird! and Moses and the Burning Bush, while Opposite Day rocks Room 710. If you're looking for a change of pace, head to Club 115 and catch OHN. The band never fails to deliver a hypnotic array of soothing, easy-to-chill-to electronic beats. Emo’s deserves a mention for putting together a fairly “last minute” line-up of solid local acts as well -- Ringo Deathstarr, Cavedweller, and She, Sir present the main dish of psychedelia complemented by a side of shoegaze, and for free no less, at the Lounge.

Still in town? Jason Morales does double duty for you this weekend -- his Tamale House #3 inspired Migas feed your noise-starved ears at the Beauty Bar on Thursday, before Morales returns with (Wayne’s World inspired?) Tia Carrera‘s experimental stoner-metal collage at Emo’s Lounge on Friday. Other notable mentions for Friday include Marky Ramone (& Friends) and The Queers at Emo’s (Inside), while Scott H. Biram plays his brand of country blues at Hole In The Wall. If you're looking to dance away that heavy Thanksgiving meal, Elysium hosts an "Indie Holiday Dance Party" on Friday with DJ Siren Summer and Team Fabrication at the helm.

If you’re rolling back in town on Saturday, The Parish beckons as Ghostface Killah, along with Rhythm Roots Allstars and DJ Mel, gets the post-Thanksgiving festivities started right, and for free -- RSVP here but get there early! Doors are at 9:30 p.m. but we recommend scoping out the line outside the venue by 8 or so at the very least! Veteran act Pocket FishRmen headline Room 710 with high energy punk n’ roll while Grupo Fantasma's latin flavor lights up Antone’s. Emo’s Lounge consistenly continues with solid Austin acts -- this evening may be filed under retro night with delightful harmonies from The Carrots and the garage rock grit of The Dazzling King Solomon Band. Round off your long weekend at The Paramount for a dose of the Australian Pink Floyd on Sunday. This tribute band has been around for nearly 20 years and their live shows are heralded as the closest substitute possible to a real Pink Floyd show. Dave Gilmour and Roger Waters have been known to attend Australian Pink Floyd shows in the past, while the band also played Gilmour’s 50th birthday bash in 1996. Grub it all up this weekend.

Tickets alert -- Click on each link to purchase tickets to the respective show -- Tori Amos (November 26, Austin Music Hall), Vampire Weekend / Brazos (November 29, The Mohawk), José González (November 29, The Parish), Soundcheck Magazine Winter Showcase w/ Moth!Fight!, Micah P. Hinson, & The Soldier Thread (December 1, Emo's), Dinosaur Jr. (December 7, Emo's), Duran Duran (December 11, Austin Music Hall), 101X Independent Workforce Xmas w/ Silversun Pickups, Britt Daniel, WMMF, & The Lemurs (December 13, Emo's), The Toadies (December 14, Austin Music Hall), Zookeeper (December 19, Stubb's Indoors), Old 97's (December 29, La Zona Rosa), The Sword (January 12, Emo's), and The Bangles (January 31, La Zona Rosa).

The Aussie Pink Floyd show was quite good. They have a solid reputation, but they still exceeded my expectations.
