For the next five Tuesdays, San Antonio band Buttercup will be The Mohawk’s guest-in-residence, and as always, the quartet will find a way to make these intimate performances unique. Grackle Mundys in San Antonio found the band performing each Monday, arguably everyone’s least favorite day, and augmenting the pain of a new workweek with themed performances that gave each show its own unforgettable flavor. These involved anything from having their audiences write postcards to home or playing a show in their pajamas, broadcast from the comfort of a communal bed.

Grackle Tuesday, as it’s being called, are early shows that will also feature various shenanigans, many of which are audience-participatory but involve nothing more mortifying than being asked to wear a hat or having one of the band members make you a sandwich. Buttercup’s website is promising “music, art, good drinks and stories,” which is something every show should have, ideally.

Today, the theme of the evening is “hats.” Any and all hats are welcome, goofy or not. The band’s show on the 27th also has an assigned theme - “Bad Luck Tuesday”. Says lead man Erik Sanden, “We will be breaking every superstition and no-no that we can. Breaking mirrors, spilling salt and not throwing it over our shoulders, walking under ladders. On second thought, it might be better for everyone to stay away.” And miss the ensuing curses? No thanks! The show on the 27th will also feature Montreal band The Winks, whose endearing, weird pop will be a perfect accompaniment to a deliciously unusual evening.

Never thought I'd see Mohawk start a 'funny hat day'.
