Today, Emo’s inside stage will be graced by Sam Jayne and his band Love as Laughter, his artistic outlet for a little under ten years after his former, very influential group Lync disbanded. Payne is best known for his work within the K Records, Olympia, WA scene, where he staked his claim for strange indie pop with the seminal Lync release These Are Not Fall Colors in 1994, played on Beck’s One Foot in the Grave, and influenced other burgeoning acts including Modest Mouse. Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse has returned the favor by signing Love as Laughter to his own label Glacial Pace, which also counts Mason Jennings as one of its signees.
Love as Laughter will be joined by two local openers, the former Orlando act New Roman Times and Yellow Fever. New Roman Times have girl-boy vocal interplay going on set against the backdrop of dark, world-weary guitar and synths that call to mind Interpol or our own I Love You But I’ve Chosen Darkness. Yellow Fever’s stripped-back sound owes its origins to the D.I.Y. Olympia scene perhaps more than anywhere else, and their impressive live performance just gets better with each show.
