The 2007 East Austin Studio Tour (E.A.S.T.) is happening this weekend, and over the next two days we'll be previewing a handful of the artists whose works you'll be able to check out.

Here's our guide to E.A.S.T. 2007:

  • The tour runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
  • With 113 studios and over 200 artists participating, it's a good idea to check out the map in advance and plan your route on this self-guided tour. You can view it online as a whole or in pieces through the links below. Printed maps are also available at Cafe Mundi, Bolm Studios, and a few other places around town.
  • This year's theme is all about Reducing Your Speed and enjoying the tour in an environmentally friendly, low-impact fashion—as such, they're encouraging you to ride your bikes from gallery to gallery.
    • Saturday morning at 10 a.m., there will be a "gigantic" launch of 100 bikes from the Yellow Bike Project at Cafe Mundi
    • If you want to make your way via bike but would rather someone else do the actual pedaling, Metrocycle Pedicab is booking tours ($50/hr, 2 hr minimum), and will allow folks to choose their own route and see the sights along the way with no worries over finding a parking space.
  • The maps are helpful, but the E.A.S.T. catalogs, which come in a nice square form-factor, go into much further detail about almost all of the participating artists and galleries.
    • You can pick one up for an affordable $5 at various places around town, including BookPeople, d berman Gallery, Cafe Mundi, Wally Workman, Big Red Sun, and Bolm Studios.
    • These, along with various tour-related merch (t-shirts, tote bags, etc), make for nice souvenirs. Last year's batch sold out pretty quickly, so get yours early.
    • All of the proceeds from these sales go straight back into keeping the tour going, which is a great thing for both the artists and our city.
  • Look for orange signs posted outside of each studio, with numbers corresponding to the official map
  • Finish your tour with some great (and free) eastside events:
    • SOL-ART opening party from 8 p.m.-11 p.m. on Saturday night at 1141 Perry Road (Austinist post)
    • Black Star Co-Op's November Beer Social at The Compound, from 7 p.m.-10 p.m. (info)
    • Opening Reception for Introduction to Mountain Making: Okay Mountain Staff at Okay Mountain, starting at 7 p.m. (Austinist post)

  • Hiya, nice day.. Your article is extremely
impressive. I never considered that it was feasible to accomplish something
like that until after I looked over your post. You certainly gave a great
perception on exactly how this whole process works. I will make sure to return
    for more advice. Thanks

Congratulations to the EAST crew and the artists for another successful tour. I had a great time pedicabbing people on prebooked tours all over the studios on the eastside, and look forward to next year!

    Hey Allen,

When downloading the full EAST Map, instead I found your impressive 35-page research paper ("A High-Speed Programmable Frequency Divider")! I'm not sure what this has to do with the EAST 2007? Check your links please...
