Come Get Your Non-Rigid Container, Tomorrow is Texas Recycles Day

Thursday November 15th is Texas Recycles Day, a statewide campaign to raise awareness about recycling. There are a number of happenings across the state, but an Austin event worth mentioning is HEB's celebration. Local area HEBs are giving out 20,000 reusable grocery bags as well as encouraging customers to use the newish plastic bag recycling containers at the entrances of the stores for both grocery bags and other thin plastic recyclables that may not be allowable by curbside recycling (such as newspaper delivery sleeves, dry cleaning bags, and soda-can rings).

Also this week, franchise operation Jason's Deli opened up its second store in Texas to be powered (at least partially) by solar energy here in Austin on south I-35 (9600 South I-35 Suite D-500). According to Jason's Deli spokespeople, the new system equates to the annual equivalent of preventing 14,200 pounds of carbon dioxide from being released into the earth's atmosphere, or eliminating a day's worth of carbon dioxide emissions from 435 cars. The system even includes the nifty feature of allowing customers to take a peek at a monitoring system to see the amount of electricity being produced by the solar panels.

Companies don't make decisions like these in a vacuum; it's clear that Austin consumers are demanding greener and more sustainable options from the establishments they patronize.
