Austinist Giveaway: Zappa Plays Zappa

Zappa Plays Zappa

Post by Mark H.

Being the spawn of an international superstar can be a tough weight to carry. Some try to sluff off comparisons, others try to appropriate their parents' legacy while striving to maintain their own sense of artistic creativity, and others still go unseen or heard until ending up in rehab. Dweezil Zappa seems to be just fine with carrying the mantle passed down from his iconic father, Frank Zappa. After a mildly successful and somewhat critically praised career as a guitarist (and less acclaimed career as a bit actor) not seeking incredible amounts of attention and avoiding living solely off the songs of his father, Dweezil has decided to pay homage to his father with a tour of shows in which he plays his dad's original compositions.

Zappa organized the tour in hopes of bringing the music of his father to a younger audience, but we imagine most of the crowds are probably their because they have spun "Apostrophe" until the grooves wore out, as opposed to fans of Dweezil's defunct cooking show with his former girlfriend Lisa Loeb. If young audiences new to Zappa's work do show up, they may not realize that among the band of somewhat unknown musicians outside of Zappa, they will also be seeing a pretty legendary performer, in former Zappa band member Ray White, legend for his performances on 70s and 80s tunes of Zappa's such as "You Are What You Is."

Dweezil pays tribute to the genius compositions of his father Tuesday, November 13 at Hogg Auditorium, and you can be there. Enter your information below for a chance to win a pair of tickets for what promises to be an orchestral rock show the likes of which do not come around very often. And, if you aren't lucky enough to win, check out the links to the right for ticket information.

Update: Congrats, winner!
