Plant a Tree for Freedom
Saturday, November 10
Zilker Park Rock Gardens (2100 Barton Springs Road)
(9am, Volunteers Welcome)
[info]
A special ceremony will honor the dedication and sacrifice of men and women who have fought to preserve our nation's liberty. Following the ceremony, volunteers organized by Tree Folks will plant each tree with a ribbon tied on the trunk to commemorate this important federal holiday. All military personnel, past and present, are invited and encouraged to attend... These living representations of gratitude and respect will continue to provide benefits to the Austin community for generations to come.
If you'd like to help out with the tree-planting, just show up. Meanwhile, all city administrative offices, Austin Public Library facilities, and city museums will be closed on Monday.

How about honoring those who didn't fight for this nation's liberty? For example those who served and fought in Iraq, Somalia, Korea, Lebanon, Greanada, Cuba, the Phillipines, China, Russia, Laos, Cambodia.
Why honor only the Revolutionary War and Civil War veterans?
How about those who fought the Native Americans in a war of subjugation?
Why honor only the Revolutionary War and Civil War veterans?
Veterans' Day was originally enacted to honor WWI vets. That's why it was traditionally on Nov. 11 (Armistice Day).
But I like the idea of recognizing those "who didn't fight." Why not have a day honoring those who moved to Canada rather than murder Vietnamese villagers? I'm sure Austin Pubic Library would gladly take that opportunity to close.
