Austinist Weekend Music Preview: Tom Waits Hoot Night and Ringo Deathstarr EP Release

It’s no secret that Austin is home to one of the most prolific artistic scenes in the country, Live Music Capital of the World or not. Any weekend in the city promises a number of day time occurences and a plethora of evening events. A quick browse through this weekend’s notifications leads one to fun activities for the kids at The Flying Theater Machine’s Wang Dang Doodle Hour or a family gala at St. John’s Annual Arts & Crafts Harvest Fair. This piece however will aim to prepare those interested in the after-dark action accessible to every fine citizen of Austin.

After the blitzkrieg that was Fun Fun Fun Fest, some sense of normalcy returns to Red River St. this weekend. Or not. The Last Gasp and The Midgetmen lead the charge at the Tom Waits Hoot Night on Friday at Emo’s Lounge while Club DeVille plays host to power-pop melodies from Kissinger and the electro-clash styling of Crash Gallery (Their EP is available now from iTunes). Austin’s own beastie boys, Vehicular ebb and flow with Berkley’s Lyrics Born at Emo’s Outside for those leaning towards hip-hop this evening.

No signs of legends slowing down in other parts of town -- Joe Ely brings his old school honky tonk to Antone’s while former Continental Club mainstay Toni Price (now living in San Diego) takes the stage at the venue that for so long hosted her beloved “hippie hour.” Round off your night at the Beauty Bar with recent Fun Fun Fun Fest DJ Prince Klassen and California’s Egyptian Lover (a-k-a Greg Broussard). Broussard has been furnishing beats at parties for over two decades now although he only started touring a few years ago. He released Platinum Pyramids in 2006 on his own Egyptian Empire Records while Pyramix II dropped earlier this year. For those occupied elsewhere this night, Egyptian Lover will also perform at Backspin Records earlier in the evening at 7:30 p.m.

Still partying? Saturday promises the eagerly anticipated Ringo Deathstarr EP release bash at Club DeVille. After their recent opening gig for The Dandy Warhols at La Zona Rosa on Halloween night, the band launches their new recordings to the masses with able support from fellow Beaumont transplants La Snacks, and Haunting Oboe Music, who stole the show at the do512 Halloween Party. If you haven’t had enough Stich during the day, make your way to The Mohawk for the After-Party or quirk up your evening with prunk from Lick Lick and Hug at the former’s CD release show at Room 710. If only for a live version of the latter’s “Don’t Shoot The President.” Swinging west of Congress St.? The eclectic collective that is White Ghost Shivers transforms Antone’s into a dance hall for the night. Or drive up to Cactus Cafe and jog up some memories with Issa (Jane Siberry), who surely touched most of us with her contribution (“It Can’t Rain All The Time”) to 1994’s cult-classic movie and soundtrack, The Crow. Godspeed and safe travels.
