Casserole Queens, the brainchild of chef Sandy Pollock and business partner Crystal Oakes, is a casserole delivery outfit servicing south, central, and north Austin with hearty throw-back fare. Great for busy working families or anyone looking for a little bit of oven-y comfort food, the Casserole Queens fill a food delivery niche with a kicky, campy retro feel. Experienced Soup Peddler soupies will be familiar with the drill: order online through the website, leave an iced cooler on your front porch on delivery day, and come home to ready-to-heat comestibles. The queens drop off all the casseroles freshly frozen, and most take 30 minutes to an hour to heat in the oven after thawing. Combine with a green salad and maybe some trusty, crusty bread and you've got an easy meal that frees you up to attend to the rest of life's toils.

We tried the Baked Ziti with Three Cheeses, which was good, but not saucy enough for our taste buds. Even with flavorful tomatoes and cheese, the pasta-to-sauce ratio left it a bit on the bland side. The queens either need to increase the amount of the sauce on this one, or back off on the pasta, the balance just didn't work. However, Lunch Lady Doris' Spicy Mac and Cheese was delicious. Rich cheese sauce with a nice little kick combined wonderfully with fresh broccoli and sun-dried tomatoes - and it was oh-so-saucy. It cooked up to perfection and was well seasoned and tasty. We'll order that one again the next time we're burned out on Chinese delivery and Soup Peddler. These kitschy queens are onto something.
