Fun Fest Follow Up With Gregg Gillis of Girl Talk

Gregg Gillis didn't have a chance to stop by and say hello during Fun Fun Fun Fest, but he was kind enough to get in touch yesterday and share his thoughts on the weekend in general. As expected, he was happy with his crowd, the stage and his set, despite his previous experiences at festivals.

Before his set, the eager crowd was already teeming with nervous excitement, perhaps recalling his set at Emo's earlier this year during SXSW. Regardless of their possible remembrance of that event, Gillis' live set is a well-known and highly regarded phenomenon, consisting of sardine-style audiences cramming on stage until being physically removed, throngs of participants reaching to the far corners of whatever venue will have him, and performances that exceed the expectations for his genre. The typical "press play" laptop artist can only dream of this kind of connection with their audience, and it seems moot at this point in the game to continue evangelizing, Girl Talk is not a press play laptop artist. Still, one wonders what he might have expected from a Waterloo Park audience on a cool fall evening.

I knew a bunch of the guys playing my stage on the same day: DJ Jester, Grand Buffet, Busdriver, Daedelus, and Caedence Weapon. So, that made it more fun for me; it just seemed like hanging out with guys I might normally play with as opposed to being thrown on a stage with a bunch of random bands. Sometimes with festivals for me, it's a little tough to connect with the crowd, since there are huge barricades and overly intense security types. My stage didn't have any of that bullshit, so it was relaxed and loose. It felt like a normal club show that happened to be outside.

So thank you, Fun Fun Fun Fest attendees! Even though the (surprisingly cool) security guard asked some of you to get off the stage, the set was still a resounding success. Owen Pallett (Final Fantasy) thought so too -- after getting off stage for a bit to greet Cadence Weapon's DJ and some other friends, he sweet talked his way up again and threw himself into the fray for some booty-shakin', JT-style.
