This Wednesday at the Mohawk, catch some local talent on the rise as part of 101X’s Homegrown Live concert series. Featuring Peel, Corto Maltese, Yellow Fever and DJ:/Rubix, it’s an excellent opportunity to see some of Austin’s best young acts. Peel have already established themselves as one of Austin’s most promising bands, both with last year’s self-titled release on Peek-A-Boo records and with their gleefully excellent noise-pop performances. Yellow Fever are also gaining a steady buzz, starting with a show or two opening for Voxtrot and with their more recent appearance at the Athens Popfest this summer. Local label i eat records has recently announced the two will be working together, so hopefully a full-length album awaits us in the not too distant future.
The Corto Maltese are also bringing their tense, guitar-infused sound to the Mohawk stage, having already been singled out by 101X’s Andy Langer on his Next Big Thing show way back in February along with other local buzz acts, like The Laughing.
To switch things up a little, DJ:/Rubix will be bumping dance tunes as well. Yet another addition to the occasionally transcendent, often awful world of mash-ups, this DJ gets props right off the bat for throwing in Laurie Anderson’s “O Superman (For Massenet)” into his mixes.
