Symphonic rock from The Polyphonic Spree (preceded by The Redwalls and Rooney) takes centre-stage at Emo’s while The Pipettes’ sometimes maligned but always accessible harmonies light up The Parish. As always, the list of shows this evening contains local flavor too -- Peel and Yellow Fever enliven The Mohawk but our loyalty might have to remain with a pair of adorable siblings from Canada, namely Tegan Rain Quin and Sara Kiersten Quin. The twins, born ~ eight minutes apart, form the core of the aptly named Tegan and Sara.
Tegan and Sara’s early records showed signs of the duo’s pop sensibilities and limitless talent but it wasn’t until 2004’s soon-to-be-classic So Jealous that their synth laden power-pop and bittersweet lyricism reeled us in. Their latest effort, The Con (produced by Chris Walla) provides more sugary melodies, enhanced by immaculate production, and single “Back In Your Head” has already been found guilty of, well, getting stuck in our head. Still, we like it there, and oodles of hip television shows such as Grey’s Anatomy and One Tree Hill have also approved the act’s music for constant cameos on their shows. Meanwhile, Sara also recently found time to collaborate with Kaki King and Ted Gowans -- the combo contributed a cover of “Sweetness Follows” to Drive XV (a Stereogum tribute to R.E.M.’s Automatic For The People).
