Football Preview: Texas vs. Oklahoma State

#14 Texas (7-2) vs. Oklahoma State (5-3)
Time: 2:30 pm, Saturday, Nov. 3
Location: Boone Pickens Stadium, Stillwater, Oklahoma
TV: ABC
Radio: KVET (98.1 FM, 1300 AM)

With three games remaining in the regular season, the Texas Longhorns are as much as a mystery as they were before the season started. Currently ranked No. 14 in the country with games remaining against unranked teams (Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, and Texas A&M), the Longhorns seem just as likely to win all three, lose them all, or come through with some sort of split. None of those outcomes would come as a particular surprise, and given the scrappy nature of Texas' season so far, all three games could come down to the wire.

The Longhorns head to Stillwater this weekend on a three-game winning streak, but the Cowboys will be the first team they've played with a winning record since an Oct. 6 loss to Oklahoma. Texas hasn't lost to Oklahoma State since 1997, and the Longhorns are 19-2 overall against the Cowboys.

Oklahoma State hit the national spotlight this season not for any on-field activity, but for coach Mike Gundy's post-game tirade ("I'm a man! I'm 40!") against a local newspaper columnist.

With an off week last week, the Cowboys have had two weeks to get ready, and they're playing at home, where they're unbeaten this season and averaging 42.8 points per game (compared to 26.3 on the road).

Game Notes

Player of the Week Honors for Charles: Running back Jamaal Charles won the nationwide fan voting for the AT&T All-America Player of the Week award following his 290-yard performance against Nebraska. Charles ran for 216 of those yards in the fourth quarter in putting up the fourth-highest rushing total in Texas history.

Second-Half Surge: Over the past four meetings, Texas has outscored Oklahoma State 143-7 in the second half of the game. During that time, OSU has gotten off to a fast start, scoring 82 first-half points, only to fall victim to Longhorn comebacks in 2003, 2004, and 2005.

Longhorn Injuries: Sophomore linebacker Sergio Kindle is out with a shoulder injury suffered last week against Nebraska. Kindle has been a physical presence on defense and special teams for the Longhorns. Defensive lineman Thomas Marshall is listed as probable with a back injury.

Opponents to Watch: Running back Dantrell Savage leads the Big 12 in rushing with an average of 124.3 yards per game -- 10th in the nation. Savage has gained 100 yards in five straight games after missing time early in the season with injuries. Wide receiver Adarius Bowman is averaging 100 yards receiving per game and has the size (6-4, 220) to cause problems for the Texas secondary.

It's Good to Be Boone: Dallas billionaire T. Boone Pickens has been Oklahoma State's biggest benefactor in recent years, giving a record $290 million to the university. More than $265 million of that total has gone to upgrade OSU's athletic facilities. Not coincidentally, the stadium that the Cowboys play in bears Pickens' name.
