Fall Back Saturday But Get Up For This Sunday’s Race For The Cure
Sunday marks the tenth anniversary of Komen Austin Race for the Cure. With 24,000 attendees and a fundraising goal of over $1 million, this year’s event is expected to be the largest in the Austin's race history. Throughout the past ten years, 150,000 Austinites have raised more than $6 million dollars to support those affected by breast cancer in our community.
Susan G. Komen for the Cure started as a promise between sisters back in 1982, when Nancy Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer. A quarter century later, Komen for the Cure has become the largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors, supporters and activists in the world. Nearly $1 billion has been raised to fund research efforts and better the lives of those facing the fight against breast cancer. Despite these impressive numbers, the harsh reality is that one million new cases will be diagnosed worldwide in 2007 alone.
Breast cancer affects 1 in 8 women, and 2,030 men annually. Ultimately, we are all affected by this disease, whether it is your wife, girlfriend, mom or friend.
If you're interested in participating in Race for the Cure, you have plenty of options – race, walk, volunteer, and even SLEEP for the Cure! Online registration is available through today; walk-up registration is located at RunTex on Riverside throughout the weekend and on Race Day between 6-7:45am.
Don’t forget to wear pink!
