Cine Las Americas Presents La Hora Fria
Deep in the heart of Tejas, November 2nd means it's time to celebrate Dia De Los Muertos, the holiday that's emblemized the grinning calavera since like, 500 years before designers went batshit crazy stenciling skulls all over everything. It's a day to honor the lives of the dead, and to acknowledge death as a continuation of life, oh and also to make party at La Zona Rosa for their Rock Y Roll Dia celebration. Cine Las Americas will kick off Friday's festivities accordingly with La Hora Fria (The Cold Hour), an hour's worth of four darkly atmospheric short films from Mexico and Brazil.
Bestiario (Beastiary, Mexico) concerns a mother and her two teenagers who keep their dad locked in the cellar for mysterious reasons until violence breaks out in the family.
Filmed with mostly nonactors in historic Atlatlahucan, Morelos, Primera Comunión (First Communion, Mexico) follows a street urchin dealing with the harshness of both street life and Catholicism.
In Terra Prometida (Promised Land, Brazil), Pedro makes a rustic coffin for a brother who is brought home dead, while the family is flattered by important guests sharing their condolences.
And O Maior Espectáculo da Terra (The Greatest Show on Earth, Brazil) is a documentary "about a circus on a tightrope."
After La Hora Fria, the "Rock y Roll" portion of the evening begins in earnest, with seven different acts including Grupo/Kumbia Kings side project Kanko and New York crunk/baile/electro darlings The Nacotheque DJs. Your $8 ticket gets you into the dance party as well as the movies.
