Upcoming FCC Decision May Make Your Cable Bill Cheaper
After strong lobbying from AT&T and Verizon, the FCC is expected to announce this week that cable companies won't have monopolies on certain apartment communities anymore. No longer will you be required to use a cable company that your complex signed a contract with if you want to get your Nip/Tuck or Burn Notice fix; such a contract between cable companies and apartment communities will no longer be allowed. Phone companies are happy because this opens the field up to include them, and not surprisingly, the big cable companies are unhappy because now there will be competition. Here's hoping such competition will cause cable companies to lower their rates for everyone.
This ruling should benefit low-income families who are limited in their residence options and have to pay ridiculous fees for even basic cable. The ruling should also be a boon to smaller cable companies such as Grande, whose prices tend to be lower than Time Warner, but whose coverage is still somewhat geographically limited.
