Snapshots: Dr. Dog Dogs the Parish

Dr. Dog played a ramshackle set of rock to a more or less appreciative audience (many of which brought to mind Deadheads of the '60s, '70s and on) at the Parish on Thursday night. Their songs could have used a plastic surgeon to give them at least the superficial appearance of the tight melodies and songwriting of the 'Beatlesesque' moniker they've been awarded in some reviews. The true standout of the evening were openers Apollo Sunshine, who delivered southern fried psychedelia by way of the Allman Brothers. The extended jam/hoops session for their final song "Lord" was truly a unique concert moment, although the (un)lucky fans who took a stray basketball to the head would probably say otherwise.

I didn't catch this show, but I've really enjoyed Apollo Sunshine when I've caught them in the past (sxsw or waterloo instores). I like that photo with the basketball, btw.

Wow. Were we at the same show? I saw no Deadheads and smelled no patchouli. I was also blown away by how packed the place was by the time the Dog went onstage. From my vantage, the audience seemed "more appreciative" than "less."

As far as a Dr. Dog show goes, this was about as good as it gets. Not sure if you've seen them before. But I don't think it's reasonable to hold them to a Beatles standard just because other reviewers do so. In fact, it's kind of... I don't know... lame? Intellectually lazy? They are their own thing. Their performances are always a bit loose. That's part of their charm. If anything, this show was TOO tight.

Apollo Sunshine was a mostly a trainwreck. They had a few moments of brilliance (the opening drum circle / the classical gas) but generally they seemed to be exactly what they are. A couple of Berklee kids who are just a little too impressed with themselves and not interested enough in writing a good song. Or in playing a solid set for that matter. They should break up soon so that their obviously talented members can move on to more meaningful projects.

In my opinion, the standout act of the night was The Delta Spirit who were the first act. Not sure if you got there in time to see them as you make no mention of them above and included no pics.
