Football Preview: Texas vs. Nebraska

#17 Texas (6-2) vs. Nebraska (4-4)
Time: 2:30 pm, Saturday, Oct. 27
Location: Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium
TV: ABC
Radio: KVET (98.1 FM, 1300 AM)

The Texas-Nebraska game on Saturday highlights the clash of history and reality.

Historically, both are among the premier programs in college football, and the numbers prove it. The schools have combined for more than 1,600 victories, nine national championships, 90 bowl appearances, and five Heisman Trophy winners.

But in the reality of this season, both teams have faced adversity. No. 17 Texas has fared better, having recovered from a pair of conference-opening losses, but the Longhorns still have only one win this season over a team with a winning record.

Nebraska's struggles have been more pronounced. Athletic director Steve Pederson was fired after the Huskers suffered their worst home loss in nearly 50 years. Nebraska has lost three consecutive games by wide margins, leading many to speculate that coach Bill Callahan won't return next season.

Game Notes

The 800 Club: Saturday's game will match up two of the four schools that have won 800 or more games in their history. Texas has won 816 games, and Nebraska has won 807. Only Michigan (866 wins) and Notre Dame (822 wins) have won more. However, the Longhorns and Cornhuskers have only played each other 11 times in their history, with Texas carrying a four-game win streak over the Huskers heading into Saturday's game.

Century Man: A win on Saturday would be Mack Brown's 100th win as coach of the Longhorns. Brown is 99-24 in 10 seasons at UT. His teams are 5-1 against Nebraska, with the only loss coming in the 1999 Big 12 Championship game.

Tickets Available: A limited number of tickets are available for Saturday's game as well as for the Texas Tech game on Nov. 10. As the work on the north end of the stadium moves closer to completion, more tickets are becoming available. Approximately 500 tickets are available for Saturday and approximately 700 tickets are available for the Tech game. Seats for both games are available for $85 each. Fans interested in purchasing tickets can order online at TexasBoxOffice.com or by calling 512-471-3333 or 800-982-BEVO.

Longhorn Injuries: The injury list for Saturday's game is as promising as it's been in a while. Defensive end Aaron Lewis (elbow) is listed as probable, as is fullback Luke Tiemann (wrist). Both receiver James Kirkendoll (hip) and defensive tackle Thomas Marshall (back) are listed as doubtful.

Opponents to Watch: Quarterback Sam Keller and running back Marlon Lucky carry the offensive load for the Huskers. Keller has thrown for 2,124 yards and 12 touchdowns this season, but also has thrown 10 interceptions. Lucky leads the team with 721 yards rushing and in receiving with 49 catches for 388 yards.

Academic Award for Griffin: Longhorns senior center Dallas Griffin has been chosen as one of the finalists for the 2007 Draddy Trophy, which recognizes an individual as the best in the country for combined academic success, football performance and exemplary community leadership. Each of the 15 finalists will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship, and the winner gets a $25,000 scholarship. While at Texas, Griffin has posted a perfect 4.0 GPA six times and graduated with a double major in business honors and finance in the spring of 2007.
