Stitch is the Word

We're looking forward to Stitch.

It's probably the most anticipated fashion-show/craft-bazaar in Austin, recognized by so-hip-it-hurts Nylon magazine as "a runway show that's as much about the community as it is about the clothes." And it only gets bigger and better each year.

We're not just blowing smoke up your Simplicity pattern skirt. We think this year's Stitch is going to blow your DIY mind. After flipping through the six-page press release, we learned that over 100 vendors from across the nation are setting up booths this bazaar's five year anniversary.

Expect interactive booths by Carlo Rossi, Duncan Craft and Birds Barbershop—which means freebies, crafts and up-dos. Besides the fashion show featuring 20 designers, there's going to be entertainment by Double Dutch Will Take You Higher and Super Sonic Soul Squad. The cherry on the top is a cameo by Bradley Baumkirchner, Project Runway Season 3 vet, who's donating one of his creations to the Grand Raffle.

We're just scratching the surface, folks. Learn about the DJs and MC, a podcast, two after-parties and more at Stitch's website.

"We really try hard to create an atmosphere...
It's a place where you want to go and see your friends, and the place to be on that night."

Local craftsters Jesse Kelly-Landes, Tina Sparkles, Karly Hand and Jennifer Perkins founded Stitch in 2003. The "rock and roll" bazaar originally took place at Ruta Maya with only 600 attendees, 9 runway designers and 25 vendors. Since then, it's moved to bigger locations and it sells out every year. Now the projected number of attendees is 4000.

"We really try hard to create an atmosphere," Jennifer says. "It's a place where you want to go and see your friends, and the place to be on that night."

We interviewed some of the artists and designers you'll see at Stitch and we start showcasing them tomorrow. Stay tuned!

I'm really glad to see that Stitch keeps getting bigger and better! It has come so far in just four years. Nice one, ladies!

Wow, this seems really interesting. It's a shame I'm going to be getting my hammered on at Wurstfest, but between sausage and hipsters, I pick sausage every time.

Thanks for the awesome article Clarisa. You can also get more hot scoop on the Stitch blog

Oh and Smack, if you make it back from sausage fest in time we have 4 bars and a 40 foot Carlo Rossi booth with free wine. :)
