Hike of the Living Dead

Zombie fans and flash mob enthusiasts, take heed: there's a walk of the undead taking place at Congress Avenue this Sunday afternoon.

The concept's pretty straightforward: at a designated time (3:30pm), an army of reanimated corpses will "spontaneously" gather at the rendezvous spot—around the South Congress and Riverside Bus Station—and proceed to terrify/confuse nearby gawkers while slowly lurching down the street. If the zombie walk is planned particularly well, expect to see "innocent" bystanders getting bitten by members of said zombie mob, thereby turning into one themselves. And so it goes.

It's all a prelude to the Drafthouse's awesome "Dismember the Alamo" Zombie Film Festival, running next Tuesday-Thursday. Participants in Sunday's festivities will likely score some nice festival-related swag.

That zombiewalk was fun. If it happens next year though the front should walk a little slower and the route should be circular so the zombies walk in character all the way back to the staging area. People on the streets responded well. A few overly serious persons seemed to think that the zombie protesters were mocking protests or that we should be protesting some real issue instead of just protesting "for fun". Personally I think that the signs were out of character for a zombie walk, or at least a Romero-type zombie. It seemed like an excuse to put the website address on the signs, which is unnecessary, the Alamo will get whatever publicity it gets simply for organizing the event and doing the press. Frankly I could have used more than just a day's notice to get some better zombie makeup, instead I made do with fake blood and ripped clothes. I go to the Lamar Alamo regularly and never saw this event advertised there.
