If it doesn't thrash, it drones: this appears to be the motto behind which Japanese noise-mongers Boris engage in all their creative affairs. Last year's underground hit Pink serves as a good introduction to the Boris aesthetic, switching gears from heavy-dreamy shoegaze to balls-out punk rock to apocalyptic doom-noise while maintaining an overall tone of singular Boris-ness.
But let's not forget this is a band that thrives on curveballs: whereas their debut, 2001's free-noise blowout Absolutego, now comes in a "Special Low Frequency" edition catering to masochistic audiophiles, this year's Rainbow LP is a jam-infused throwback to mellow 60s psychedelia featuring blissed-out textures and acid-fried guitar leads courtesy of countryman Michio Kurihara, currently on loan from the Japanese doom band Ghost. Kurihara's also featured on tonight's bill, along with the dream-folk duo Damon and Naomi, former rhythm section for the late great Galaxie 500. Bring earplugs (seriously, the amps onstage will weigh more than your house), but don't forget your lovebeads.
