Austinist Show Preview: Alas, Alak, Alaska and More at Natrix Natrix
The label and house that bear the name Natrix Natrix are the result of a fruitful and creative partnership between couple Rhonda Turnbough and Seth Whaland. To date, the label has put out eleven releases, most of which are very limited edition cassettes that feature personalized art and music from a nationwide staple of folk musicians including Viking Moses, John Rose, and compilation featuring Jana Hunter, Real Live Tigers, The Lovely Sparrows, and more.
When not doubling as their residence, the Natrix Natrix house has played host to a variety of touring and local acts, thanks to the synchronicity of a very excellent garage/art space for performances, and the close proximity of nearly deaf neighbors. On the 21st of October, Whaland, Turnbough and their roommates with open their doors for a performance by Alas, Alak, Alaska (that’s just one, oddly-punctuated band), Foot Ox, French Quarter, and locals Spirit of Space.
The three touring acts will be stopping off in Austin on a tour that will take them across the entire United States from October to January, and will feature performances at locales including Athens, Georgia, Panama City, Florida, and, of course, the rock-and-roll hotbed of New Britain, Connecticut.
All shows at Natrix Natrix are free but they ask for a recommended donation of around three to five dollars for the bands, and each show also features a potluck to begin around 8.
