Governor Rick Perry today announced his official support of Republican presidential candidate and former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani, whose pro-abortion stance has enraged many conservatives.
Perry, in today's declaration, admitted that reconciling the hot-button issue was the biggest obstacle in his endorsement. Giuliani, in turn, pledged to nominate hard-line "strict constructionist" judges to the Supreme Court. Perry replied that he was "comfortable" with this answer.
"For the last six months, I have cogitated," said Perry on a morning TV show appearance. "I've looked, I've studied these candidates -- some of them I know very well -- and came to the conclusion that the individual who can lead America with clarity, the individual who has the experience, the individual who cleaned up a city that was absolutely on its back is Mayor Rudy Giuliani."
As the Boston Globe blog points out, today's announcement makes Perry the first sitting governor to openly endorse Giuliani. What's more, the strategic move puts him at the front of the line for that sweet VP slot that many believe he's been gunning for.
