Austinist Show Preiew: Two Gallants, Blitzen Trapper at The Mohawk

Before “Don’t tase me, bro!” entered our national parlance, Saddle Creek signees Two Gallants had their own run-in with an overzealous, taser-happy police officer and his lack of discretion. It took place in Houston, no less, yet another reason for bands to avoid any part of Texas east of Austin - not that they really needed one. After the dust settled, Two Gallants continue to tour un-tasered, and will be spending the one year anniversary of the event at The Mohawk. The band’s third release for Saddle Creek is self-titled, and finds guitarist and vocalist Adam Stephens and drummer and vocalist Tyson Vogel hammering out the stripped-back, noisy folk for which they are known.

Touring with Two Gallants are Blitzen Trapper, a Portland sextet who recently made the move to Sub Pop records, possibly in time to score the soundtrack of this winter’s big blockbuster hit about a young person in their mid-20s struggling to be understood. The band is supporting their third album Wild Mountain Nation, which has garnished them comparisons to rock vanguards like Beck and Pavement.

Also playing the Mohawk that night are Songs 4 Moms, three rocking ladies from Oakland, CA, and Ferraby Lionheart, a singer-songwriter type from Los Angeles with a bit of a Jeff Buckley vibe to him.

"Another reason to avoid any part of Texas east of Austin"

A typical self-aggrandizing statement from cooler-than-thou Austinite hipster jackasses. Just one more reason for the rest of Texas to avoid Austin.
