Justin Broadrick's Jesu project was initially conceived as a departure from the pummeling industrial metal of his best-known project, Godflesh. But there has always been an overlap between the two: Godflesh had its ethereal moments, and the claustrophobic grind of "Friends Are Evil," from Jesu's self-titled debut, is a Godflesh track in everything but name. But the last few Jesu releases have found Broadrick roaming further than ever from the strictures of his other projects, creating a yearning, at times even uplifting concatenation of doomy riffs, chiming synth textures, and near-whispered vocals. "Lifeline", the opening track from Jesu’s new EP of the same name, features crunchy guitars, but they're placed so low in the mix they give the effect of an oncoming electrical storm, rumbling along under soaring keyboards and vocal harmonies.

Not many people would describe Lifeline as a pop record by any stretch of the imagination, but it’s the closest Broadrick’s come to creating such a thing in his long career. The trip-hop beat driving “You Wear Their Masks” wouldn’t sound out of place on a Madonna remix; “End Of The Road” is one of the most triumphant-sounding anti-anthems in Jesu’s catalog.
You'll have a chance to hear some of these tracks live as Jesu takes the stage at Mohawk in their first non-SXSW appearance in Austin. Remember the last time we thought they were coming? Yeah, that was pretty funny, Dept. of Homeland Security.
