AFF Preview: Target Family Film Series
Even people with kids like to watch movies. Partly because family films are just plain fun and educational, and partly because they, if only for a short period of time, provide a distraction from the endless, high-pitched squealing that children provide. But whatever the motivation, the Austin Film Festival's Family Film Series has a little something for everyone this year. Check out our rundown!
Moondance Alexander | Dir. Michael Damian
Saturday, October 13
12:30pm, Regal Arbor Theater
First of all--yes, that Michael Damian. The Michael Damian who played Danny Romalotti on The Young and the Restless and who recorded a #1 version of "Rock On".
Anyhoo, Moondance Alexander is the true story of a young girl named, er, Moondance, who finds a lost pinto pony named Checkers. Convinced that Checkers is a champion jumper in disguise, Moondance is determined to help him realize his full potential. And in time she discovers that perseverance, loyalty and individuality can land you in the winner’s circle.

A Plumm Summer | Dir. Caroline Zelder
Sunday, October 14
12:00pm, Regal Arbor Theater
Unbelievably, A Plumm Summer is based on an actual event that happened in screenwriter TJ Lynch's hometown during the 1960's. Here's the short version: when a wisecracking celebrity puppet disappears during a live performance in front of hundreds of children, the FBI comes to Montana to crack the case. And when a pretty new neighbor moves next door to non-believer Elliot, he joins her and his 5-year-old brother to try and solve the mystery themselves. What begins as a lark, becomes increasingly essential for Elliot as the stakes rise dramatically.
Lynch is a recipient of the Nicholl Fellowship in Screenwriting, which is a mega-prestigious scriptwriting competition sponsored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. And the script he wrote during his Fellowship year became A Plumm Summer. Interested? We are.

The Bracelet of Bordeaux | Dir. Casey Kelly
Sunday, October 14
5:15pm, Regal Arbor Theater
There's been a dognapping! And the police are, naturally, powerless to find the purloined pooch! But with the help of a magical bracelet, two pre-teen girls take up the challenge, and in the process they learn some junk about friendship, courage and the importance of hanging with the right crowd.
The adventures of Helen Hixon, her adorable dog, Rufus, and her best friend Marie comprise a humorous and mysterious tale that will entertain both children and parents. Plus, it was shot in Texas, and you gotta like that.

Um, yeah, so Michael Damien is the brother of the guy that wrote all the music for Teen Witch, and we ALL know how kick ass that movie was. Hippy-named girls and horsies = awesomeness.
And I pity the fool who stole my sock monkey, 'cause the FBI is hot on your trail!
