AFF Preview: Green Cinema Showcase

Here in Austin, we're all about the environment and stuff. Right? Damn right! So this year's AFF Green Cinema Showcase should go over especially well with all you envirothusiasts out there. This year's program will feature three films that explore topical environmental issues like global warming, industrial hemp production and renewable fuel sources.

Oh hey--if you're interested in these films, you might also want to check out Gimme Green, a short documentary exploring America's obsession with the residential lawn, and Blood Car, a darkly comic tale about a guy who invents an engine that runs on human blood (we'll be at that screening for sure).

Freedom Fuels | Dir. Martin O’Brien

Freedom Fuels is an in-depth look at renewable fuel sources, such as bio-diesel, ethanol and vegetable oil.

Exploring the relationship between the petroleum industry and alternative fuels over the last 150 years, the film examines the global impact that bio-fuels could have on our future.

Freedom Fuels features interviews with leading scientists from across the world and celebrity activists including Darryl Hannah and Willie Nelson.

Standing Silent Nation | Dir. Suree Towfighnia
Sunday, October 14
12:15pm, Hideout Theatre

Standing Silent Nation follows a Native American family as they plant industrial hemp on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. The family has put their hope for a sustainable economy into hemp’s hardiness and versatility. But when federal agents raid the reservation, the Lakota Nation is swept into a Byzantine struggle over tribal sovereignty, economic rights, and common sense.

Suree Towfighnia's engaging documentary is an in-depth exploration of our nation’s attitude towards the production of industrial hemp.
