Austinist Show Preview: Rilo Kiley @ Stubb's
If you go to Rilo Kiley’s MySpace page and scroll down, you’ll run into a pillar of adolescent female faces beside comments professing their love for the band and expressing intense jubilation over finally being able to see the group at their local rock club after years of adoration from afar. This is the result of having a gorgeous, strong, sexually candid leading lady - Jenny Lewis - who is very capable of helming disco-era pop tunes as well as folk-rock ballads. But, she is also very capable of eclipsing the other members of her band.
Sunday night at Stubb’s try to focus a little less on the glittering chanteuse moving across the stage with the poise of a dancer. Instead, watch the other members as their stage presence calls out to you saying, “Hey, look over here. I can be sexy too.” Guitarist Blake Sennett bites his lip and plucks out the lead, bassist Pierre de Reeder thumps steadily and provocatively and drummer Jason Boesel sensually taps out the beat as he gives the crowd bedroom eyes. Under The Blacklight, Rilo Kiley’s latest album, simmers in a sexy vibe. It’s full of this steamy kind of LA pop sound that may initially be a little hard for fans of the old records to choke down. But before too long, it’ll have it’s hooks in you.
The Bird and the Bee - Greg Kurstin (bee) and Inara George (bird) - are a jazz-influenced, indie/pop duo on Blue Note Records. The airy and harmonious tunes are quite quirky with their gently layered vocals, keys and adept production. Grand Ole Party in all their groovy, gritty, funky rock threesome glory will open. Enjoy it on us:
