UT Ranks 16th in the Nation for Sports Donations

money.jpgThe University of Texas raised $26 million in athletic donations in 2006, putting it 16th among all U.S. universities.

A study by The Chronicle of Higher Education found that money for athletics accounts for more than one-quarter of all contributions to some universities.

The Chronicle survey reported that the country's largest athletic departments and booster clubs raised more than $1.2 billion in 2006 and 2007.

The University of Texas wasn't the top athletic fund-raiser in Texas, however. Texas A&M ranked ninth in the country with $32 million raised.

The top fund-raisers in the country for 2006 were:

  • University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, $51 million
  • University of Virginia, $45.2 million
  • Ohio State University, $39 million
  • University of Florida, $37.4 million
  • University of Georgia, $36.6 million

In the Big 12 conference, the leaders were:

  • Texas A&M University, $32 million
  • University of Texas, $26 million
  • Iowa State University, $19.6 million
  • Texas Tech University, $17.8 million
  • University of Oklahoma, $17.4 million
