A popular dance-workout phenomenon that's been getting asses in shape in New York City and Chicago is now catching on in Austin.
It's called the Dance Dance Party Party — think of it as a ladies-only, free-form, DIY Sunday night Rock the Casbah to help you work off that weekend of boozing. In their October/November issue, BUST magazine explains its appeal as bringing back that "giddy, uninhibited spirit of those bygone slumber parties, when you and your BFFs would bounce around all night to your favorite albums."
For each class, the dancers take turns assembling a 90-minute iPod playlist of killer jams spanning everything from Run DMC and Madonna to LCD Soundsystem and David Bowie. The mirrors are covered and the lights are dimmed, so no one has to worry about looking ridiculous while feverishly gyrating to "Thriller."
"Here’s the deal," say the organizers of DDPP Austin. "[It's] a group of ladies getting together once a week to dance their asses off for an hour and a half. There’s no teacher to follow, so you can shake it however you wanna. No boys and no judgment."
The first session happened last Sunday, and from what we've heard was a great success. A $5 fee helps cover the cost of renting the studio. Bring dancing shoes, or dance in your bare feet.

I'm judging them right now.
Does the fee pay for my hit of X and glowsticks?
"ladies-only" = can't get a date? Surely there are better things to do. Wouldn't they have been out dancing their asses off on Friday and Saturday night? Also, anyone who is affected by knowing they're being judged should be taking self esteem classes on Sunday night instead of promoting their fear of being judged by hiding.
Or, you know, it could just be a fun way to get some exercise when you're sick of all the bullshit yoga classes. Also, hey, you could make some platonic new friends.
I mean, I am cynical as fuck, but god. What the hell is wrong with chicks wanting to tear it up to Billie Jean?
Also, dancing in bare feet is fun in a different way than dancing in heels. From one anonymous poster to another, get over it.
I know it may sound inconceiveable to some, but sometimes women want to gather sans men and just not deal. No bullshit, no booze, no cheesy lines, no make-up, no being chatted up by men who assume that women choosing not be around men are gay or ugly. Um, I think I just talked myself into it.
Oh god, no makeup! See you there.
Bravo #5 for enforcing the point. Lord knows a woman can't go out around men without heels on. Why can't you wear comfy shoes to the club? Oh yeah, you're worried about being judged. Also, thanks to #6 for generalizing the entire male population. Sorry, not all of us hang out on 4th and 6th streets and get our game from Maxim.
Puh-lease Poster #8, it's not a genralization of men. It's a genralization of the scene in genral including both men AND women. Don't be so then-thitive.
Oh yeah? Well I'm gonna go hunting.
Easy now everybody.
