Reminder: SXSW Application Deadlines Coming Up

US bands have less than two months to apply for a showcase slot at SXSW Music. Turn in your application before next Friday and you'll save yourself a little beer money.

There are two ways to apply: through SXSW's site, or using Sonicbids. The latter is a great option for bands who already have an electronic press kit (EPK), as they'll just use this to evaluate the application. If you opt for the former, you'll need to have mp3s, photos, and a standard bio/press kit ready to upload.

Early application deadline ($20): October 5
Standard deadline, international artists ($30): October 26
Standard deadline, US artists ($30): November 9, 2007

[Apply via Sonicbids]

Filmmakers have until December 7 to submit stuff for any of the seven categories, which are: Narrative Feature, Documentary Feature, Narrative Short, Documentary Short, Animated Short, Experimental Short, and Music Video. Shorts should run under 40 minutes long, and only DVDs are accepted.

SXSW Film does not accept trailers or works in progress. If you send us a rough-cut, we cannot guarantee we'll have time to view a finished product, particularly if a new tape is sent after early January. Your film has a better chance of being selected if SXSW is able to review a finished product. The festival will screen on 35mm and HDCam this year (subject to change). If your film is selected to screen, our technical staff will work to ensure the best screening format.

Early application deadline ($25 for shorts, $35 for features): November 16
Standard deadline ($35 for shorts and $45 for features): December 7

SXSW is irrelevant in 2007. Don't waste your time/money.

ok.

but relevant in 2008 right?

No... continuing further into obscurity. A festival based on getting unsigned bands in front or record labels? Run by fat old hippies? Who actually call the fire marshal on unaffiliated events? Please.

They don't call the fire marshall on unaffiliated events. They just provided a list of all the events to the fire marshall in an attempt to save their own ass and some of the dipshits running the unaffiliated events didn't have the foresight it takes to make sure they were playing by the rules and their events got shut down.

Don't blame the fat old hippies for the mistakes of the crusty old WASPs.

Unsure on what the difference is between "calling the fire marshall" and "providing a list" to the fire marshall is. Once done the fire marshall has to treat it as an official complaint.

I'm going to say it very slowly... only complete and utter assholes EVER bring fire marshall into the equation. And SXSW did and are.

Providing a list beforehand to cover your own ass doesn't point out the people the fire marshall should target.

When you say they called the fire marshall, you make it seem like they were targeting certain parties, which was not the case.

But if you insist they were assholes, I guess the assholes were fighting assholes with assholes since the people hosting the parties were even bigger assholes than the original assholes.

Again not sure on how "providing a list... covers your own ass." And not sure how you think this doesn't point out the people the fire marshal should target.

Logic dictates that providing a list to the fire marshall inherently targets those on the list. Especially when the fire marshall has to then act on an official complaint. SXSW targets ALL non-affiliated events and views them as competition for sponsors, talent and fans.

Question: would you provide a list/call the fire marshall? Even if he was being a dick to you? I wouldn't. Because doing so makes you a dick too. Right?

Oh, and Frankie Chan, JDH & Dave P (FIXED), Gibson Guitars.... not assholes. Actually really decent people who put on great events all over the country and now have a horrible view of Austin. Sad.

A list of all sanctioned and non-sanctioned events was provided to the fire marshall. It's a "cover your ass" technique because when a party is out of control and people are calling 911 saying, "there's a fire at the Shitty Levi's Farter's Trading Post Thing That Is Never There 360 Days of the Year" then the fire marshalls have a list with an address with the venue names and addresses they can consult. Duh. Think this shit over a second and you'll see it makes fucking sense.

As for those guys, boo fucking hoo. I will let you know when I care. Those guys can suck it after putting those hideous public "art" guitars all over our once beautiful city.

AND a list still doesn't excuse those old fucks for not providing a safe venue for their party or following the city's party rules (yeah, lame, party rules - until someone dies).

So you're saying that SXSW contacted the fire marshall because they are concerned with public safety? Are you really that ignorant? That naive?

And that was a mystery permit at the time (since corrected when the City realised they had a PR nightmare on there hands - google city of austin public assembly permit and you'll link up. That page was put in place AFTER SXSW at the insistance of some of the party planners.)

All those events had plenty of cops on hand and were providing a safe environment.

ha! Yeah, right. Sure they were. They were all also checking IDs at the door and making sure that they didn't exceed the maximum capacity for their buildings. And then, at the end of the night, flying puppy dogs attached themselves to party goer's feet and yip-yip-yipped their sweet little puppy mouths and wagged their cute widdle puppy tails and flew everyone home safe and sound. And Louis Black is a big mean ogre. And Factory People deserved more love than mean old Austin gave them because their goods really were of top notch quality and a good value for the money. And you are the only one that sees the truth. And I really don't give a shit whether or not SXSW is a success or not because I pretty much hate all the fucktards that invade Austin for it.

yeah, those after parties sure were safe. remember that time blue genie didn't have enough legal exits for a party? or the time the Elks Lodge collapsed?

jesus. i'm not sxswrolandswensonapologist, but let's get fucking real here. having a party during sxsw, even if it's not sxsw sanctioned, means your event IS tied to sxsw. someone dies at that party and the press WILL report it as taking place during sxsw. sxsw, as a business, has a vested interest in keeping their brand name clean. and Austin has a vested interested in sxsw being a reputable and safe event.

You obviously weren't at the affected events because they did have cops on the door, who do a hell of a lot more to ensure public safety than the fire marshall. Name one SXSW event that employs APD.

The only reason there even was an event at the Elks Lodge is because they had to scramble last minute to find a AFD approve venue. Self fulfilling prophecy. Heck of a job Mr Fire Marshall, that place is a pit.
.
Actually you are a Black/Swensen apologist (and incredibly naive) if you really think that SXSW alerted AFD because they were concerned about public safety.

I'm right. You're wrong. This is getting boring and I'm going to Winter Music Conference this year.

Oh yeah? Well my daddy is bigger than ur daddy!
