Austinist Previews Wall Of Sound Festival: Spectrum, Bobby Bare Jr. & Tacks, The Boy Disaster
So the 2007 Austin City Limits Music Festival has come and gone but you still haven’t had enough music. Thankfully, the 2007 Wall Of Sound Festival is just around the corner. Besides catching headliners such as Explosions In The Sky, Midlake, and Ghostland Observatory, be sure to check out Spectrum. The brainchild of Spacemen 3’s Sonic Boom (a.k.a. Peter Kember), the act will be performing new songs while Spacemen 3 era tracks are also promised. We recently caught up with the legendary Sonic over the phone and learnt that a new record (with a working title of On The Wings Of Mercury) is almost two-thirds done and is set to be released early next year. Too long a wait? Not to worry, Sonic also noted that fans can expect an EP in November of this year. Sonic’s Experimental Audio Research project is on hold as he devotes his full attention to Spectrum for now.
Also kind enough to respond to a few of our queries were Bobby Bare Jr. and Tacks, The Boy Disaster. The former informed us of a recent gig at the 2007 Musicfest NW where he employed members of The Decemberists as his backing band! When quizzed about a possible Bare Jr. reunion, we were thrilled to learn that Mr. Bare Jr. will indeed reunite with this former band-mates for a show on November 23rd in Nashville. We can still dream of the prospect of a mouthwatering tour with Superdrag (also recently reunited.)
Tacks, The Boy Disaster will release a full length follow-up in 2008 to their wonderful EP, Oh, Beatrice. On being probed a tad, Evan Jacobs revealed a desire to meddle with a reacTable, which according to him, is “by far the coolest thing I’ve seen in a long time. It's a circular, glowing table and these little "module" things -- like Oscillators, LFOs, Sample players, etc. They all interact together and make some pretty amazing sounds and visuals. Plus, you can have as many people playing it as you can fit around the table.” He went on to add that he’s looking forward to catching Explosions In The Sky specifically at the Wall Of Sound Festival, being a fan of their “ridiculous climaxes.”
P.S. Check out William Mills’ recent Le Diamont Brut post on another Wall Of Sound Festival artist, Micah P. Henson.
