Other Events This Weekend: Feliz Diez y Seis!
The Mexican holiday of Diez y Seis is this weekend (September 16), and the City of Austin, along with the Consul General of Mexico and the Fiesta de Independencia Foundation, is holding the annual celebration at Waterloo Park. The holiday is a celebration of Mexico's independence from Spain. At this local celebration, Consul General Rosalba Ojeda will perform "El Grito", the yell that in some ways led to the War for Independence. Performances at this event on Saturday evening will also include Roy Lozano's Ballet Folklorico de Texas, a Ballet Folklorico group from Coahuila, Mexico, and a mariachi performance.
Earlier on Saturday, the Mexican American Cultural Center will have its grand opening. The goal of the Cultural Center is to promote and celebrate the arts of Chicano, Native American and other Latino cultures in our community. For the grand opening, the Center has a full day of events planned, starting at 11am. There will be puppet shows, Ballet Folklorico, rug-weaving, story-telling, and comedy, among other activities. Parking will be at Krieg Fields and a shuttle service will deliver you to the Center.
Both Saturday events are family-friendly and best of all, free!
