Austinist Previews Austin City Limits: Zap Mama and the Heartless Bastards

zapmama.jpgMarie Daulne (aka Zap Mama) is one helluva woman. This tireless globe-trotting humanitarian also happens to be soulful singer, not content to simply sit on her laurels and make groovy music. She's got enough clout to work with famous musicians like Pink Floyd's David Gilmore and virtuoso bassist Meshell Ndegeocello. It's an intoxicating blend of "World" music, Reggae, Funk, and Hip-Hop, and a set that guarantees gleeful globe-trotting.

1kogan.jpgCincinatti natives The Heartless Bastards are known for the emotive, gale-force vocals of lead singer Erika Wennerstrom couple with their rough-edged, gimmick-free sense of self . If you've turned up your nose at their mention because you thought they were a pop-punk band you're: A) waaaaay too judgmental and B) missing out on their temperamental, understated brand of basement-rock. Familiarize yourself and become a fan.
