Austinist Giveaway: Yo La Tengo and the Black @ the Parish Room Monday

We first fell in love with Yo La Tengo at 17. We were still stuck out in the sticks in high school, still reading Rolling Stone and still wearing those pink crackle-finish Vans. And Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out had just been released, and Rolling Stone recommended it for people who liked the Velvet Underground. We ordered the album from Hasting's, and when the album came in and we popped it into the Discman we had hooked into our car's tape deck, we were in love.

Now, it's been a few years, but the feeling still lingers, and the band continues to put out lush, compelling music. Post-ACL, Yo La Tengo will be performing an official ACL aftershow Monday at the Parish Room and we will so be there. Joining the indie pop posterkids (and film fans -- Yo La Tengo are presenting Dario Argento's Four Flies on Grey Velvet, John & Faith Hubley's animated short Cockaboody and other gems earlier Monday evening) will be Austin locals the Black. The Black, who have toured with fellow Austinite Pink Nasty, produce twang-infused post-Rolling Stones blues rock. If you think about the Stones singing "Sitting on a Fence" at a honkytonk someplace out in West Texas, in an alternate universe in which the locals don't know who the Stones are and don't find Keith Richards's fashion sense offensive, you'll have a pretty good impression of what the Black sound like.

Yo La Tengo and the Black
Monday, September 17, 8:30 p.m.

Tickets, $17 advance, $20 door

Since we were so disappointed earlier this year when the band had to cancel a show at the last minute (and moreso later when we heard it wouldn't be rescheduled), we're happy to offer you a chance to go see them next week:
