Austinist Show Preview: The Rentals at Emo's

emos_12sep2007.jpgMany moons ago, a band named Weezer released a couple of solid records. Featured on bass and backing vocals on those albums was one exceptionally talented individual named Matt Sharp. Besides his contributions to Weezer, Sharp has been involved in a number of other projects -- occasionally solo, but most notably the lovable act named The Rentals.

The Rentals released two albums (Return Of The Rentals and Seven More Minutes) in the 90’s. The band had a hit with their first single “Friends Of P.” but for the large part, commercial success was scant. Sharp next concentrated on his solo material, leading to an EP (Puckett’s Versus The Country Boy) and a self-titled album, as well as a seated, acoustic show at Emo’s Inside that we were fortunate enough to attend a few years ago. The Rentals truly returned in 2007 with the release of the Last Little Life EP, a short collection of wonderful melodies accentuated by constant synth (of course) and Sharp’s vocal inter-play with his female counterparts in the band. The Rentals bring their pop harmonies to Emo’s on Wednesday evening. The show starts early at 8 p.m. with goldenboy and Copeland preceding The Rentals. Happy days are back again!

I was also at that sit-down inside emos show. It's was so odd and quiet. You had to whisper to the bartender during the show to order a beer, less you wanted to cause a scene. Looking forward to the full band.
