Austinist Previews Austin City Limits: Raul Malo, Eli Young & Aterciopelados

raul.jpgThis "velvet-voiced" Latin crooner guy Raul Malo is undeniably talented. Conjuring some of the most beloved singers of our centuries, you'll hear a little Buck Owens, Ray Charles, and Frank Sinatra and lots of Roy Orbison in his finely trained pipes. Please email us if you make out with that new someone to any of these songs. We'll buy you a beer next time we see you out, 'cause that's awesome.

Raul Malo
Latest Release: After Hours, 2007
Saturday the 15th,1:30pm, Dell Stage

eliyoung.jpgSome smooth Alt-Country on the light side from singer Mike Eli and guitarist James Young, the band's two namesakes. Get it? If you've ever inadvertently tapped your foot along with a Pat Green or Robert Earl Keen song, then you might just drink a lot of beer and crank these guys' music waaaay up while you search online to find NCAA paraphernalia that defines you as a person.

Eli Young Band
Latest Release: Level, 2005
Denton, TX
Sunday the 16th,1:30pm, Austin Venture Stage

atrsdfsdf.jpgWhether or not you can pronounce this band's name, there's a good chance you will enjoy their ACL Fest set. Laid back as all-git-out (is that a contradiction in terms?), they hail from Colombia and will "kidnap" your attention with their entrancing pan-Latin vibe and occasional pan flute. Can't go wrong.

Aterciopelados
Latest Release: Oye, 2006
Colombia, South America
Saturday the 15th, 7:15pm, WaMu Stage

UPDATE: Rodrigo Y Gabriela have announced that they are canceling their September shows, including ACL, due to exhaustion y fatigue.

rodrigo.jpgAdmit it, you saw a couple foreign-looking names and wrote this act off as "World Music" or something. They are anything but. This duo's mastery of the guitar is bound to impress the sweaty crowds at ACL Fest, and make some of the other acts question their chops. Influences range from Megadeth to Segovia, a combination conducive to simultaneously banging one's head and shaking one's hips.

Rodrigo Y Gabriela
Latest Release: Rodrigo Y Gabriela, 2006
Mexico
Sunday the 16th, 3:30pm, Dell Stage

i thought rodrigo y gabriela canceled?

FYI: Rodrigo y Gabriela cancelled their shows for ACL and Antone's.

You probably want to edit the post to reflect that.

are you fucking kidding me? They cancelled 5 days ago. Way to be on the ball there, austinist. Nice work. Maybe we can get a white stripes preview tomorrow.

Rodrigo y Gabriela cancelled forever ago, can't you be a little more on top of things? Cmon Austinist...

This preview was written over a week ago, and emended as soon as we found out about the cancellation. The lag is due to the previous draft being cached, requiring a re-publication.

Settle down, dude.

Me gusto kidnap joke.

Hey, joshuachuck, didja hear the news? Guess what? Them people canceled. I didn't know if you knew or if anyone had told you, but it's true. You heard it here first.

I had to say that twice because the first time a sneaky c got in there.

I know things have changed a lot recently, but there are a lot of errors in the times. One last check before publishing might have been nice.

I don't remember commenters always being such jerks on this site...

Also "but there are a lot of errors in the times"? What does that mean? Perhaps you should have checked before YOU published!

Keep up the good work, Austinist :)

I am so so so so so so SO disappointed R y G canceled. They were one of my top bands I wanted to see live, and since they were at a smaller stage I could probably have actually been able to distinguish facial features.

POR QUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

I think "but there are a lot of errors in the times" means that there are a lot of mistakes in the times listed.

I've been paying pretty close attention to these and I haven't seen "a lot" of errors. Sounds pretty unfounded to me.

I have "no idea".
