White Stripes Out of ACL?

For updates, go to today's post

The Statesman's 360 blog is reporting that the White Stripes have pulled out of the ACL Festival. The band was scheduled to play on Saturday night in the headlining position opposite Arcade Fire, as well as an after party @ Stubb's on Sunday.

The word on the streets is that someone is ill, we'll be sure to keep you posted as details emerge.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

I hear Jack got ill after listening to Icky Thump.

Damn.

I was looking forward to them taking people away from Arcade Fire. That way it wouldn't be so crowded for me!

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSS!!!!!!!!!!!!11!!!!!

I can't really hate the White Stripes even though I am doing it here. I just hate Icky Thump and to a lesser extent, Get Behind Me Satan. They're better than that.

still can't handle the shite drumming. i got my artist pass today. it is black.

Fuck you, uselessgoo. I got an artist pass. Gas. On the bus this morning.

Meg went a bit whacky in the head...so they're a no go. Boo.

Maybe it's PMS and she'll be all better by Saturday.

Looks like Rodrigo y Gabriela are out also. . . a statement on their site says that Gabriela is suffering from exhaustion and they have cancelled their September dates.

ZZ Top will be announced this afternoon as Saturday's replacement. Hell yes.

Oh man. Those White Stripes fans are gonna be screeeeeeeaming. And not in a good way.

Expect Sunday passes to drop to $5 on craigslist before the day is done. I shit you not.

Saturday / Sunday / whatever day I say they were to play.

If someone is sick or ill on Tuesday how can they be sure that they'll won't be better by Saturday. I would only except a sick excuse if it were the day before or the day of. And if it's just Meg, then ACL should fly in the rest of the Raconteurs for an encore performance from last year.

user-pic

they play saturday. and it's confirmed on the stubb's website.

The two acts I really wanted to see was Amy Winehouse and White Stripes! Unfortunately, I couldn't get Saturday or Sunday tickets!
Now they're both out...could my wrath be that powerful?

If someone is sick or ill on Tuesday how can they be sure that they'll won't be better by Saturday.

Yeah, I don't know. There aren't anything sicknesses or illnesses that result in people being sick for more than a week. Like an appendix bursting. Or a broken limb. Or pneumonia. Or god knows what.

pregnancy lasts longer than a week and might qualify as a medical condition.

I can confirm that representatives of the band U2 have been in Austin recently to discuss an appearance at a major, upcoming music festival in Austin.

The appearance was to be unannounced, but festival reps are currently considering giving the band billing in advance.

Word on the streets or exactly what was reported in the statesman? Don't act like your doing anything but reposting someone else's work.

I think these chaps got the scoop:

http://nodessertforyou.com/2007/09/11/girl-you-have-no-faith-in-therapy/

Nervous breakdown by Meg. These days I think thats code for a drug overdose or suicide attempt. Hope not.

the fill-in is not U2 according to the statesman now. and really, if they did headline, it would be a big deal, not a last minute thing.

I hear Britney is hoping to branch out to a new audience. Someone should call her agent. Or just offer her some jerky to come visit.

your nodeserforyou link sucks.

Poor Meg. She looks a little crazy in that picture.

The NoDessertForYou writer took down the post, b/c his comment that Meg had a nervous breakdown was wrong (or he doesn't want to be sued. . .)

The Stubbs blog on myspace confirms the cancelation for the Stubbs show.

Straight from the Stubbs site:

WE REGRET TO INFORM YOU THE WHITE STRIPES AFTERSHOW HAS BEEN CANCELLED DUE TO MEDICAL REASONS
PLEASE CONTACT FRONT GATE TICKETS AT 888.512.SHOW FOR REFUND INFORMATION. ALL CREDIT CARD ORDERS WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY REFUNDED TO CARD, SO NO NEED TO CALL.

Nice to know that those who bought tickets to this show with a card won't have to jump through hoops for a refund.

so people that have already sold their tickets to the stubb's show will be eligible for a refund if they bought them online with a credit card but the people that have bought tickets from someone off craigslist or ebay will not. that sucks! i'm glad i was waiting until the last minute to find tickets to that show and i didn't get screwed out of over $150.

FUCK.

Someone send an emergency jet to go pick up Radiohead.

GOD DAMN! How much were those tickets anyway?

And suddenly everyone is left with the most expensive tickets to Dr. Dog ever.

call pedro winter and get the daft punk boys over here.

Man, ACL is fucked if they don't get some good replacements. Not literally because I have good word that Charles Attel shits solid gold dubloons, but everbody is going to hate that man if he doesn't come up with somebody better than the White Stripes.

I think next year he should can the bands that are on tour all summer and get people between albums so that they'll actually (you know) show up.

"And suddenly everyone is left with the most expensive tickets to Dr. Dog ever." Great commetn.

or better yet gimme-a-banana and dial up the FOTC's.

ha! You people are nuts.

it would require a pretty big favor by a band to figure out the logistics of playing a show of this size on such short notice. expect one of the other bands (Muse, maybe?) to just be moved into the Stripes spot.

-the hammer

Everybody, welcome Mr. Charles Attal, signing in as guest #42.

From my frontgatetickets email:
Ghostland Observatory have been slated to replace the White Stripes at Stubb’s on Sunday, September 16, with Cold War Kids. Tickets go on sale Tuesday,
September 11, at 5 pm. YOU WILL NEED TO REPURCHASE TICKETS TO ATTEND GHOSTLAND OBSERVATORY.

No way. HA! That's a trip. I guess the Rappin' Granny was busy on Sunday.

GLO is slated to go until 8:30 sunday night so no way they can play Stubbs after that. (the shows have to be over by 11pm). So GLO will play Saturday night opposite AF (hopefully they'll switch slots).

GLO-TWIN POWERS ACTIVATE!

FORM OF: DISAPPOINTMENT.

SHAPE OF: A SUCKFEST.

CarterB - do you have a link to the onsale info on frontgate?

GLO can't play on saturday at ACL....they already play at the Treasure Island Music Fest in San Francisco

Ghostland at Stubb's on Sunday night? Guess that means they've been moved from their 7:45 slot on Sunday night at the festival. Can't imagine Aaron having enough stamina to play two outdoor shows within a couple of hours of each other.

which would be worse: britney or lauren hill? they are both off their rockers.

"GLO can't play..."

hasn't stopped them from trying.

I keep busting on GLO, and I know I shouldn't, but they honestly, really really really really do suck.

And to continue THAT thought, you're pretty much trading raw passion for catatonic pretension.

No the email didn't have a link. I can't find the link either. As for San Francisico that would definitely be a kink but seriously there's hardly anyway for them to play two shows 5 miles apart within 30 minutes of each other. Maybe they'll move up to earlier on Sunday?

Lauren Hill can sing like a maniac though.

I bet they move Ghostland to Saturday afternoon and end up having Muse or Blue October fill The White Stripes timeslot...

@CarterB - yeah I've been scouring frontgatetickets.com to no avail

Fuck Attal for booking a horrible show in the first place, The Killers? What a lazy fuck, they were here a few months ago. And now that the Stripes have cancelled, half of Austin want's that man's head on a pike. AND if he does announce ZZ Top, that's lazy too, they played the Backyard AND Selma not too long ago. Sure they'd be fun, but we deserve better than that.

It's official Muse takes the slot. check austin360.com for the details but basically they move the White Stripes stage up 2 hours and have an opening at the top around noon.

Oh shit - I always mix up GLO and Octopus Project. Ghostland doesn't suck THAT much.

Where does the refund line start? $145 for a band that can't even do a decent cover of Apache.

A giant turd has just been dropped on my weekend.

For those who are wondering, or care, I just talked to GLO, they are still playing their 7:45-8:30 set at ACL Fest then being shuttled over to Stubb's. Apparently curfew is being pushed back to 11, so GLO will go on before 10 and play till they get kicked off the stage, laser light show and all.

Lasers! Take that White Stripes!

GOD DAMN! I ASK AGAIN!

Who the fuck is paying $145 to see a show at Stubbs? I wouldn't pay $3 to see a show at Stubbs because the venue sucks ass.

So why is everyone acting like the whole thing is a wash out if the White Stripes don't perform? There's something like 50 million other bands playing. Go see one of them.

I've always liked Stubbs as a venue. Course, I make a habit of making sure I am there early enough to be close to the stage. $5 chopped beef sammitch and nice outdoor atmosphere. It's always been one of my favorite Austin venues.

#74- I agree. I was way more excited to see White Stripes than Arcade Fire, but now I'll get to see AF and just move on with my life. I like the Stripes, but is my experience of sitting in a field with friends, drinking beer and relaxing really going to be thrown off because I didn't hear the White Stripes?

And shit, the Dr. Dog song I heard once wasn't all that bad. It might be worth drinking a bloody mary and checking them out early now.

since when is muse even considered headliner material?

Those of you who don't think Muse is "headliner material" need to pull your heads out of your ignorant, provincial assholes. They headlined at Lollapalooza and sold out multiple nights in a row at Wembley Stadium. They are one of the biggest bands in the world and put on one hell of a show.

hahaha muse is one of the biggest bands in the world?!?? hahahahahahaha!!!!!

christ some of the comments on here remind me of high school..it's like those music clique kids never grew up

well since muse hasn't released any new material, and i saw them last year, I don't expect a whole different show. Good, because I want to see all of arcade fire.

The problem I have with Stubbs is that it's always too hot unless it's January, or if it's not hot it's raining and it's a mud bath.

"The two acts I really wanted to see was Amy Winehouse and White Stripes! Unfortunately, I couldn't get Saturday or Sunday tickets!
Now they're both out...could my wrath be that powerful?"

Yes it can! I believe in you!

Muse can't be one of the biggest and best bands in the world. the have not played Mohawk and they have not openend for Spoon.

#74- "...is my experience of sitting in a field with friends, drinking beer and relaxing really going to be thrown off because I didn't hear the White Stripes?"
Dude, you can sit in a field and drink beer with your friends and not listen to the White Stripes anytime. For free.
Arcade Fire is going to be a crush of people now that Muse is the other band, and it sucks for Muse that they won't be getting the exposure of playing to a huge field of WS fans.

#85- I'll probably watch half of Muse and half of Arcade Fire. It still doesn't crush me.

Anyway, entire tour is canceled for the Stripes:

http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/news/45535-white-stripes-cancel-tour-due-to-megs-anxiety

"They are one of the biggest bands in the world and put on one hell of a show."
I hope to God that by "biggest" you mean SHITTIEST. And that by "hell of a show" you mean, the crappies 45 minutes of your life. Cause seriously, they are the WORST band in the world.

I don't see why Meg can't be replaced with one of those wind up cymbal playing monkeys. The show must go on!

I have acute anxiety about the port-o-pottie situation at ACL, but it isn't stopping me from going.

ACL is a bust this year. It has finally happened. What used to be a great festival has turned into another money making machine that doesn't really care. I mean seriously, you want me to by next year's passes on Monday morning!? LMAO. No wonder so many people are sending me e-mails asking if they know anyone who wants to buy a pass at face value. As of this morning I can officially say that out of the 20+ person group we have for every year, none of us are going now due to a shitty line up, the greed factor and the fact that ACL has lost what made it special.

Don't get me wrong, there will still be tens of thousands of those people who live in Round Rock and Cedar Park who make the trek to thh big city and those from parts of the country where live music is somethng that happens 50 miles away and of course all of the new "cool" kids from Cali who are here to make their prescence known, but alas, for the true fans of ACL who have been there year after year you can not with any honesty say you are excited about what this has become.

I'll buy your 3-day for $20 cash today. Just meet me in the back of the Hickory Street at 12:30 and we'll get this all squared away.

By "in the back" I mean "in the alley" and by "squared away" I mean "I won't bring my knife".

#90 No one really cares about your "officially" stated group of 20+ who don't want to go because 3 acts canceled.

And no one really cares that you were a "true fan of ACL". I went to the first one and I've gone to all the other years. And every year, someone complains about something, right?

Chairs. Heat. Dirt. Rain. Coldplay. Sunshine. Beer prices. Water prices. Portapotties. Cowboy hats. Shitty sound. Bad scheduling. Great scheduling.

You can't fucking please 60,000 people and you can't make Meg White not insane.

You don't want to go, don't.

You want to go, go.

Last year I paid $50 for a 3-day pass at around 4pm on the first day. Scalpers were on the verge of slittng their writsts. Even better were all my ACL nerd friends who were kicking themselves for paying $145 when I got a scalper to come down $50 on his original offer. I thought they might learn their lesson. Have you seen all the ads on ebay and craigslist? Apparently not!!! The White Stripes cancelling should be great news for anyone (like myself) waiting till the last minute to make a steal. Kiss my ass, Attal. Fucking pretty boy.

I hate ACL fest. I've never gone and never will but the reason I hate it is because I have to hear all of Austin bitch about it months before and months after. I wish the whole damn thing would just stop happening. NONE of you seem to enjoy it. You complain about the bands, the price, the venues, the arrangement, the creator, the other people in the audience, the price of water. It's quite miserable to hear. Yet, you all fork over the money, buy the water, deal with the people, listen to bands you weren't completely thrilled about, work around the scheduling and pride yourself on perpetuating the Live Music Capital stance anyway. If anything will make me a music hater, it's listening to music "fans" talk. Reading comments here (which is always depressing) and listening to coworkers and seeing reviews of the fest makes me wonder why anyone bothers. It seems like there must be some fun to be had but that just gets ignored in order to go on and on about how a certain band "sucks" or a venue "sucks" or how the poor sap who started the fest "sucks" because it's changed over the years. Really? Then don't go. Then nothing will have to SUCK to you, and HOW DARE anything not be exactly to your liking anyway! ...gahh!

I want to go. Back when the White Stripes and Amy Winehouse were playing. But even then it was too expensive.

I know what you're saying, 94. I bought a one day for the year the Pixies played and ended up with two free wristbands from an aquaintence that worked for CSE and couldn't give them away to anyone else. I tried to give away my Saturday ticket that I'd bought to people downtown and on the way to Zilker and nobody wanted it. NOBODY. I'm trying to schlep it off to the sno cone people and the water people and the bums and bus drivers and nobody wanted the damn thing. I cannot figure out how they sell out year after year.

And for the record, I have never been back since because I realized in that one year what a horrible mistake ACL is.

Everyone claims they're not going and those tickets aren't selling, but it's always packed.

I think you're all full of shit with your friends, friends of friends, and friends of friends of friends. You're all going to be there and you're all going to have fun and then you'll go back next year.

And then you'll complain anonymously about everything. Cycle. Rinse. Repeat.

You can think I'm full of shit all you want. It doesn't change the truth of the matter which is - you can't give those tickets away. I know personally because I've tried. I also know why nobody wanted them after being out in the hot sun, listening to hours and hours of half assed bands, realizing it wasn't worth it and promising myself to never return.

But you keep bitching about people complaining because it's fucking hilarious.

#93, It's not that 3 bands canceled, its because the line up sucks and the drop outs only make it worse on top of the money machine it has become. The only real gripe I have about the festival in regards to the people who do attend. Don't park on our fucking lawns, don't piss on them and take you damn trash back to Cedar Park with you when you leave. Waking up every morning with food wrappers, bottles, beer packages and cigarette butts all over the front yard is annoying.

#100 fair enough. I like the lineup, but had I known it wasn't going to be as good as it has in past years, I might not have bought my tickets.

Will I buy a ticket next year? I don't know, but calling for Attal's head on a stick or posting on here sure as hell isn't going to improve THIS YEAR'S fun quotient.

With that kind of attitude you might was well just stay home.

Aw geeze. I can't wait until next year. I'm gonna get me a booth and sell "Attal's Head-On-A-Stick". Then everyone will love me and I will be complete.

Wow it must really suck to live in the neighborhood where all the action happens. Maybe YOU should move up to Cedar Park, or out to the "kuntry" so you don't have to deal with all those people in YOUR neighborhood-- you know, the one you moved to because it's close-in.

I love the people and the activities that happen in my neighborhood, but why should I have to accept that people throwing their trash all over my lawn is part of the fun? I'm not one of those people who thinks no one should park here, they're public streets, but my property is mine and waking up to corn dog sticks and beer bottles broken all over my lawn isn't all that great. You obviously don't own a home do you? If you do, can I have the address so I can drive my truck across your lawn and throw my trash on it for a few days?

AND IN OTHER NEWS:
ACL Fest gets bought out by Wal Mart, Inc after a 'less than awesome' turnout. Lee Scott asks if he can book Tesla and Genesis for 2008 Fest.

acl is walmart.
i have said it every year.
i only went year one.
poor ass festival.

Broken glass everywhere, people pissing on the stairs, you know they just don't care. I cant take the smell, I cant take the noise, got no money to move out, I guess I got no choice...

Don't push me, cause I'm close to the edge...
I'm trying not to loose my head

Where are all those people claiming you couldn't give your tickets away for this year's festival?

Did you see the dozens of people every day out on Barton Springs and Lamar trying to buy tickets? They were all offering face value or more.

Yeah, I saw all the idiots who were trying to buy tickets and they were the same ones who were claiming that scalpers just rip you off. Saturday morning 3 day passses were going for $60-75 from most scalpers, face value from regular sellers. Who was ripping who off?

I was only talking about on Friday early afternoon that people were offering face value (or more) to purchase 3 day passes all over Barton Springs and Lamar. Obviously by Saturday and Sunday, when the festival was partially over, they weren't offering face value.

Either way, I still call bullshit on the people saying you couldn't give your tickets away for $0.

haha, it's funny to read this now with all you morons complaining about Ghostland Observatory how they suck and couldnt sell your tickets

1 year later and GLO is that Sh!t and consistantly sell out every show they play anywhere they play

GLO was praised by every review of both shows, and considered by most to be the best act of ACL 2007

everyone is a critic

always thought those white stripes looked a little pale not surprised she was sick, apparently she never recovered either

Not to undermine your excellent point about Ghostland, but were you waiting all year just to post what amounts to "I told you so"?

Yes.

While the rest of us were eating our rage talking about condos, McCain, and bike riders or car drivers, this guy was saving it all up for Meg White.

How cute.

You gotta respect bottled anger.
