Help Rename Town Lake Park

The City of Austin wants your input in naming the new 21-acre, $7.3-mililon park just south of Lady Bird Lake. The recently opened area, which houses the Palmer Events Center and the Long Center, is currently dubbed "Town Lake Park," but a "facilities naming ordinance" calls for the park to be rechristened in honor of "an individual(s) (living or dead) or something other than an individual such as a place or natural feature."

Submit your recommendations using their simple online form or via any of the ways listed below before December 10th; once the deadline's passed, they'll hold a public hearing and let the City Council decide among the finalists.

Nomination forms are available at the Parks and Recreation Department’s Main Office, 200 S. Lamar Blvd.; by calling (512) 974-6716; or online at www.cityofaustin.org/parks/namingform.htm. Forms may be returned:

  • Online at www.cityofaustin.org/parks/namingform.htm
  • Submitted at the Parks and Recreation Department, 200 S. Lamar Blvd.
  • Faxed to (512) 974-6756
  • Mailed to:

They really should call it something like Austin Community Park simply because everything else is named after dead people.

if you haven't visited this sweet little park you should; it's great. it just opened a week or two ago. it's between Daughtery Arts Center and Palmer Events Center.

The other night I took 6 12 year olds with me, and they went crazy climbing the hills, following the little spirally paths; and making up stories about all the cities in Texas on the map at the very top of the hill. at night time it's a magical spot; awesome view of downtown. There is a pond with croaking frogs, and squirting fountains, which were turned off at night.

Hmmm. I should ask the kids what they'd name it . . .

Sweet, I can finally submit my proposed name for the park, "Bill."

  • guest

And we're still talking about it because those imbiciles at City Hall didn't name it right the first time.

  • guest

It's named Lake Lady Bird but it needs to be named Lady Bird Lake because Lake Lady Bird sounds about as good as Lake Shit and Lady Bird Lake sounds as good as Lake Sweetness.

  • guest

um, isn't it lady bird lake? why is everyone talking about the difference between "lake lady bird" and "lady bird lake" when it has already been named? this is about naming the park...not the stupid lake. you guys are idiots.

  • guest

    YES! Parke Dubya!

  • guest

I like Lady Bird Lake better than Lake Lady Bird too. I always call it Lady Bird Lake and all them others can rot in Hell.

  • guest

I think we should honor a great American by naming it in honor of our 46th Governor.

  • guest

    my nomination?

    Person making nomination: terry o

    Suggested name:Town Lake Park

Reason for nomination:there's a beautiful fountain grate surrounded by lights in the middle of it that's ALREADY NAMED TOWN LAKE PARK. why confuse the masses? Also, for the record, Lady Bird Lake sounds SO much better than Lake Lady Bird. Say it with me, "Lady. Bird. Lake." Rolls of the tongue nicely, huh?

Additional comments: Seriously. It already has a name. Stop with the renaming business. Spend the energy and manpower on figuring out how to fix the mess that is I-35. Or just rename it, "Semi-truck DEATH HIGHWAY - wooooo!"
