Austinist Previews Austin City Limits: Jon Dee Graham, Kevin Devine, and Ike Reilly Assassination
Austin-based singer and guitarist Jon Dee Graham has a gravel-filled voice that calls to mind Tom Waits. Graham's songwriting is full of salt-of-the-earth wisdom, and his style is comfortingly familiar without being overdone or unoriginal. That said, Graham's style is too high-energy to get him lumped into the singer-songwriter category.

Ike Reilly Assassination is the project of one Ike Reilly, a Libertyville, IL native who has gained a reputation for his raucous live shows and sharp songwriting. The sound is all-American with influences that seem to run the gamut from folk rock to garage rock -- sort of like hearing a set with Bob Dylan and garage rock's greatest horsing around to see what they can come up with.

Kevin Devine puts out emotive songs that swing from simple guy-and-guitar arrangements to big ol' ensembles. One of several artists who got dropped after the Capitol-Virgin merger, the Brooklynite is now working with the Academy Fight Song label and keeping up a packed touring schedule, which demonstrates an impressive level of stick-to-it-ness.
