Austinist Show Preview: The Silver Apples at Emo's

sa.jpgDanny Taylor and Simeon Coxe III created The Silver Apples in 1967 in New York City. With Simeon supplying the vocals and synth, and Taylor providing the percussion, the duo created psychedelic soundscapes accentuated by electronic beats. Their name was coined from a William Butler Yeats poem while musically, the duo employed all the tricks of the trade that might seem fairly standard now but were truly innovative at the time. Simeon utilized multiple audio oscillators as well as telegraph keys, sound filters, and radio parts (among other things) to generate an assortment of sounds and noises, and was quite a character from what we gather.

The Silver Apples put out two albums in the '60s (Silver Apples and Contact) and in 1994, a German label (TRC) revitalized the duo’s music, re-releasing both albums. A tour ensued, with Simeon having recruited a new band member (Xian Hawkins) and Taylor also eventually returning to the fold. New music in the form of Beacon and Decatur, and unreleased material (The Garden) followed suit. In 1998, Simeon suffered serious injuries after the band’s van crashed (but has since recovered), and in 2005, Danny Taylor passed away due to complications arising from a heart attack. But the music never dies -- Simeon continues to carry the torch and The Silver Apples (in their current form) will illuminate Emo’s Inside on Wednesday night. You should go:
