The Laurie Show
*The views expressed in The Laurie Show are those of the author and do not represent Austinist as a whole.* -ed. note
Once again, I am plagued with the thought of: "Why is everything happening this weekend?! WHY, I ask you?!" Literally, it's packed with such a wide variety of live musical entertainment that your brain will explode. It can be a good dilemma to have, though. I'll try to summarize as best I can and keep it short and sweet, and maybe play a couple of tunes here and there on The Laurie Show on KUT this evening to celebrate the goings-on.
A heads-up for you: My show will only be a couple of hours this week, and will include an interview with DJ Ian Orth of Learning Secrets, who'll be talking about his Saturday night party at the Beauty Bar. Then, after my show, make way for a great episode of World Cafe from NPR.
I must work diligently to cram a bunch of great music into two hours' worth of show. Wish me luck, man, that's all I can say...
First off, there are a couple of things I'd like to recommend going on tonight. Over at Lambert's on 401 W. 2nd St., Zookeeper will be in the line-up for a show with Alex Dupree and the Trapdoor Band, and Sad Accordions. Over at the Emo's inside stage, Young Heart Attack headlines the evening, and The Applicators, Human Being Lawnmower, and The Steps get the party rolling.
On Saturday...I don't even know where to begin. I love it when all the great events stack up and get ridiculous, but yikes! Decisions to be made!
When the lovely Jennifer Marchand of Bleu French Laundry Productions gave me the heads up about the gargantuan 1967 Hoot Happening at Ruta Maya, I about passed out from the information overload and abundance of grooviness. Get this: twenty-two bands performing at this huge show, baby. The Summer of Love 40th anniversary celebration goes from 3 p.m. to 3 a.m., so there'll be plenty to enjoy, including barbecue, slam poet action, and DJs playing groovy '67 tunes. Can you dig it? I think you can. Ruta Maya is located out at Penn Field, 3601 S. Congress. Call (512) 707-9637 if you need directions.
One of the bands on the roster is Tammany Hall Machine. They'll be playing the Locals At La Zona Rosa show at around 10 p.m., followed by Sounds Under Radio, The Drawing Board, and A Pocket Full of Denge. Then Tammany's rushing off to the Summer of Love gig for a gig after 1 a.m. Guys, how do you do it?
Absolutely do not forget that Saturday night is the night to dance at the Beauty Bar. DJ Ian Orth, the mind behind the parties, happenings and all things fantastic of Learning Secrets, will provide the music to move to. Always great sets by Ian, and many thanks go to him for dropping by the KUT studios to have a chat. Listen for the interview tonight after midnight!
Over at the Mohawk on Red River, the peeps of KVRX 91.7 are having their supah-dupah web launch party with a ton of great bands: Maneja Beto, Fancy Feast, Lomita, Peter and The Wolf, Yellow Fever, The Foot Patrol, and Mercers. Remember that proceeds from the door benefit KVRX. Go and show your support, kids.
Over at the Continental Club on S. Congress, get yourself some beer and enjoy all the great music by The Texas Sapphires, the amazing Black Joe Lewis, and The Weary Boys. Great stuff all around by these artists.
Like I said, this column's a shorty, but hopefully it'll give you an idea of what to check out this weekend. Keep in mind that my show will be a special two-hour edition, 11 p.m. to 1 a.m., followed by World Cafe, 90.5 on your FM dial. Stream it, if that works for you. And, in the words of RoboCop that you know so well, thank you for your cooperation.
