New Movie Melange: Slightly Cranky Edition

the_invasion_08-17-07.jpgThe Invasion
Kidman stars in this remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers. While some might argue that this particular sacred cow does not need a remake, others might argue that a remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers that was first directed by the German guy who made the fantastic Der Untergang, and then meddled with post-production by the Wachowski Brothers, is a totally different story. Monstruous and beautiful hybrid, we hail you. [Trailer]

Superbad
George Michael Bluth goes big-screen, teams up with one of the stoner guys from that stoner house in Knocked Up, tries to find chicks. Mas importante, the whole thing bears the golden comedic touch of Judd Apatow, abetted by the increasingly-golden fingers of Seth Rogen, which means that you will probably laugh the whole time and emerge feeling warm toward your fellow humans. (Remedy for this feeling: one screening of The Invasion.) [Trailer]

Arctic Tale
Little baby polar bears are in trouble! A documentary about Arctic wildlife, narrated by Queen Latifah, is surely the remedy. Load all the kiddies into your Chevy Tahoe, or maybe - how apropos - your Toyota Tundra, and drive on over. Just try not to drown in all that newly released ice-cap irony before you get there! [Trailer]

The Last Legion
This swords-and-sandals flick stars Colin Firth and Ben Kingsley, and follows Romans at the end of their empire who take a trip to England (perhaps in their Toyota Tundra? nah!) Supposedly, the movie is showing us "the beginning of the King Arthur myth". Is our world-history chronology a bit rusty, or does this sound like time-space collapse? [Trailer]

Death at a Funeral
We would tell you that this one's directed by Frank Oz, but then we would have to remember that the last thing he directed was the remake of The Stepford Wives, and then we would have to take a second to remember the travesty of that movie's ending, and that wouldn't be too fun. So instead we'll just say that this is a movie about a dysfunctional family in England which unites/unties itself during its father's funeral. We saw the preview and it looked kind of cheaply anti-gay, but previews could make Karl Rove look avuncular, so maybe it's awesome anyway. [Trailer]

Also Opening This Weekend
Lights in the Dusk
A lonely security guard falls under the spell of a devious woman who is really setting him up to take the rap for a crime in this poignant drama from writer/director Aki Kaurismäki. [Trailer]

My Best Friend
To win a wager, a friendless antique dealer (Daniel Auteuil) hires a cab driver (Dany Boon) to help him find a real buddy. A comedy from legendary French filmmaker Patrice Leconte. [Trailer]

The Ten
Bad behavior makes for good comedy in this irreverent but hilarious collection of ten vignettes inspired by the Biblical commandments. [Trailer]

Also worthy of note: The King of Kong comes out this week, and it's brilliant. Probably the highlight of SXSW 2007. Great movie.

Re: The Last Legion. Actually, the historic King Arthur, if there was one, was probably a Romano-Briton leader who became a warlord-type figure after the Romans pulled out of Britain in the early fifth century. So Romans traveling to Britain at the end of the Roman Empire could have met the leader who became the basis for the Arthur legends. (And no, I'm not getting that from the Clive Owen King Arthur movie--it's been a relatively heavily-supported theory in the scholarly community.)

The bigger question is...what's wrong with The Last Legion that it didn't screen for critics?
