Fricano's Deli Hosts One Year Anniversary Party

If you're in the campus area tomorrow, swing by the Speedway Mart corner (Speedway & 31st Street) if you want to witness a true miracle in Austin restaurant history. Battling stubborn/cheap students, rising rent and bad weather for foot traffic, Fricano's Deli has accomplished something that even national chains can't pull off in the campus area—they have reached their first anniversary. As a provider of an amazing variety of creative sandwich options to students, professors and passers-by with a college-dive atmosphere, Fricano's has solidified itself as one of Austin's true and respectable local businesses.

To celebrate this one year of business, owner Paul Fricano has decided to throw an anniversary block party in front of his deli tomorrow, Saturday, August 18. You can count on neighbors Speedway Mart and The Hook-Up Lounge will be there. Unfortunately, don't expect The Lost Sock, which just recently went out of business.

Deli regulars, The Lennings, The Band Next Door, Cold Electric and Salmonella Rex will all be performing in the parking lot beginning at 12pm. Special guests and activities have also been scheduled.

Going to Fricano's Deli, especially going to their block party tomorrow, is likely the closest thing to what the campus area was like 30 years ago, laid-back, local and the furthest from commercial you can get.

That really sucks about the Lost Sock, which was a cool place, but I'm glad Fricano's has stuck around and I hope it doesn't go anywhere. The service there is always so damn friendly, and the pizza sandwich they have is a glorious thing to behold.

It's not on the normal menu, but real regulars/sandwich afficiancdos will ask for The Andrew Vickers-pesto, pepporoni, capicola, fresh basil, oil and vinegar. Grilled.
