Read Hawthorne's "The Scarlett Letter" for an idea of how long this has been practiced in America. The above story is a perfect example of what was meant by Yacob bar Yusef, 1st CE religious leader when he said "The human tounge is more deadly than the poison of the most venomous serpent." Without proof, any one can be accused of any crime, and a majority will believe it, even if the accuser recants.
