So That's Where the Girls Are: HRC Brings a Little Dinah to Texas

Have you ever found yourself yearning to be lost in the sea of lesbians that is the Dinah Shore Weekend in Palm Springs, but you can’t seem to get away? Do you want to have a night off from struggling to figure out where all the lesbians go in Austin and why the full-fledged lesbian bars in town can't keep from closing? More importantly, have you been patiently waiting since the year 1930 to attend an event that includes burlesque dancers performing under torchlight?

If you answered “yes” to the questions above and you enjoy celebrations of equality to boot, the Human Rights Campaign has just the shindig for you. On September 8th, the Austin HRC chapter will present the second annual Dinah Lakeshore Event – a night that begins with water taxi transportation on the pier between Lucy’s Boatyard and Hula Hut and ends at a spectacular lake house on Lakeshore Drive that serves as a hub for entertainment, mingling and dance party extravaganzas. Curve Magazine declares it a party so popular that it “has been used as an example on how to increase membership for HRC chapters around the country.”

According to event organizer Katy Farrar, tickets are selling incredibly fast. On top of the Curve article, The Advocate has already gotten wind of the event, so you better get a move on - the word is most definitely out. You can get your tickets on the event site - $35 for general admission and $55 for VIP tickets. Tickets include food, drink and HRC membership for the year. If you’re looking to donate more, tipping for drinks is a form of community service for the night. All beverage tips are donated back to the HRC.

Now, boys, before you get out your protest signs and demand some form of equal rights of your own, know that you are welcome and, in fact, encouraged to attend. As for the rest of you ladies – lesbian or otherwise - if you’ve reached the point where spending your weekends pining away for Leisha Hailey and Katherine Moennig on reruns of Showtime’s The L Word just doesn’t cut it anymore, get your tickets ASAP. It’s not every day that the HRC brings Dinah to your doorstep.
